What all areas would you consider the "flats" out of Port O'Connor?

I have a buddy going down this weekend to do some scouting and I want to tell him all the areas to try. I too would like to know what all areas are considered the "flats".

Thanks in advance.

go south down intracoastal. Take any left. There will be flats out there. Flats are usually water that is waist deep or less, in my opinion. Water you can wade. Usually surrounded by saltgrass.

Southside of dewberry Island both east and west are considered the flats.

What about around grass island and the pringle shorelines? Decent wading?

Southside of Grass Island. About 50 yards out on the grass line just wade down it and you'll be hitting trout all day.

el presidente, lemontree has it nailed....and as far as pringle goes....just wade up and down the shoreline and remember there r "guts" all over the place over there so be patient and you could sit in one spot and land ur stringer in no time! tight lines to ya

Thanks all. Looking forward to my trip in a few weeks. Hope the weather holds. Supposed to be a warmer than normal winter.

AustinAg, not too interested in meeting said bull shark!!!!

I though I heard it was supposed to be average or cooler than normal this winter?

All the squirrels are fat and furry already. It's going to be cold.

Yes on Pringle. Wade out and find the depth they like, or as was mentioned before, the "guts." You will probably fill your stringer if you are patient enough, and you have a shot at a real trophy. I've had decent luck in Pringle as well, although it is very shallow. Grass is good, but the south side is very muddy. Dewberry is usually pretty good, too.

There are always big sharks hanging around there! Also at Pass Cavallo and Lighthouse Cove.

Good spot. Be prepared for deep mud.

If you are fishing the guts outside of Dewberry, hope you don't run into whatever it was that wasy slicing our cohahoe's up weekend before last.

We were running outside a way, heading north, and saw very "nervous" water about 50-60 yds off the island. Swung in for a drift and first cast something HAMMERED my plasitic. Set the hook and it pulled loose fairly easy. Got it in and it was sliced, like with a scalple sliced, in three places, about 3/8" apart. One before the front of the barb, one and the bend of the hook, and one behind the hook. The slice in front of the barb cut all the way around the hook. The back just fell off in my hand. Came off the hook in three seperate pieces.

Dad had much the same multiple slice result, except one cut in and went down the side about a 5/8". Carved right out and all he felt was a little thump.

We each lost two plastics, due to being sliced up, in about three casts each, then it was gone.

Been fishing down there since '72 or so and have never seen anthing like it.

Dad looked over at a gull sitting on the water and said "if he knew what we did, he wouldn't be there too much longer.."

If you have a pumping south wind, drift the off colored water in Pringle.

Heading down Tuesday and coming back Thursday morning. TPWD posted this on Wednesday:

PORT O'CONNOR Bull redfish are good at the jetty on crabs, finger mullet and live shrimp. Trout are good over shell and mud in San Antonio Bay on soft plastics and live shrimp. Redfish are good in Saluria Bayou on shrimp.

There is a cut just right if you are facing the old Coast Guard station, go up that cut about 50yrds. and there used to be some great redfish up there. I haven't fished there since I left though.

Same way my grandfather told me how to determine a winter. From Augugst - September the squirrels at our house were working extremely hard to get as many acorns, pomegranates, etc. into their dens for the winter. Definitely going to be a cold winter.

The J hook used to be good too.

Did you wade at J hook?

I saw some folks wading just south of the old coast guard station last time we were at pass cavallo.

If I remember correctly it's to deep to wade the J hook.

These folks were in between j hook and the coast guard station.

Yea if I recall that part has heavy shoaling right in that area. Watch out for those oyster beds though. You can also stop into the fishing center (if it's still there) they have those fishing maps that will tell you where the best wade fishing is.

The cut you are talking about is the Oil Well Cut (or First Oil Well Cut). Good spot. Not sure how it would be this time of year.

J hook can be good but there are some steep dropoffs, so be careful, especially if you are on the gulf side.

The area y'all are talking about between the j-hook and the coast guard ruins is the Coast Guard Flat. It's been productive for me on reds and trout, and I have always caught a lot of black drum there when I've used bait. You may be talking about a slightly different spot if you're having trouble with oysters, because most of that flat is hard sand with little or no vegetation and few oysters. Very easy to wade. Although there are pipelines across it.

What about fishing the reefs? A buddy of mine said he has pretty good luck fishing the reefs this time of year.

CoastguardAg00,

Fishing Center is there, physically, and appears in working order....

but THE FISHING CENTER (we've been WAITING for YOU while drinking copious amounts of beer Mr. I Can't Load a Boat for My Life Guy) is viturally gone.

Gary, who worked there for many years during the heyday passed away this last spring. The new "group" that has taken over POC does not appreciate the humor of the good ol' days at the boat ramp.

Man, some of the stuff that went on back then would have made Chevy Chase look polished.

Me and two buddies just got a wild hair about two hours ago. We're haulin' ass down to Port Oconor (from CS) for a little line wetting. I'll let you guys know how it went when I get back.

P.S. if you guys hear about three knuckle heads in a bass boat drowning in the bay, it was nice knowing yall.

If you wade the flats outside Dewberry, and get sliced plastics, don't hold out much hope.

No Way! Gary passed? That is sad to hear. I remember those days that you speak of by the way, many of which I'm glad to say I experienced when I was not on duty!
