I've always heard that tomato juice will remove the smell, never had to try it though

I have. It works okay but takes several applications. Don't put it on a white dog though unless you what him to be pink for a while. Been there, done that.

I've never seen that tomato juice works worth a damn.

Here's what I would suggest.

* 1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
* 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap
* Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
* Use it right away because its effectiveness drops off pretty quick.
* Later, Rinse, Repeat if necessary.

My dogs always seem to get into skunks. Basically, ive tried just about everything and had the best luck with the formula you can buy at pet stores. However, they will still stink for a couple of weeks. It just never gets all the skunk smell off of them but reduces it greatly.

Time from spray to clean shouldn't affect anything.

Does anyone else besides me like the way a skunk smells? Not when up close though. I've heard tomoto juice and also vinegar. Vinegar is great for taking fish smell off your hands after cleaning.

White vinegar and Hydrogen peroxide both oxidize some of the odor causing chemicals, neutralizing the smell to a large extent.

The solution that sean posted works pretty well.

Don't waste your time on the tomato juice. Been there, done that. Wife picked up some skunk smell removing shampoo - that helped the most, but don't expect miracles.

Vinegar and baking soda would work well, except I don't know if the reaction combining the two causes burns on skin or not.

Shampoo them with half pet shampoo and VERY liberal applications of OdoBan which you can buy at the store. It may take a couple of two applications, but it knocks it down pretty good. Be sure to wear rubber gloves though!

Tomato juice does not abate the odor. It will keep the odor from rubbing off on stuff, though.

Add a cup of lemon juice to what Sean said above. neighbors dog got hit right in the face. Took about 3 washes, but it worked.

Do not use tomato JUICE, use the PASTE.

We use the paste on our dogs when they get sprayed and it helps a lot. It does not completely get rid of the smell and you will smell the paste on them later, but after a few applications the skunk smell is WAY down.

The stuff at the pet stores works pretty good. It won't completely remove the smell after one application, but it helps a lot. The smell will go away after a few days.

When I got sprayed by a skunk, I tried a whole bunch of remedies: tomato juice, sauce, and paste, vinegar, ******, etc. Didn't work. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap worked the best.

Turned my hair colors, but it worked.

I almost got sprayed by a skunk this weekend.

I was walking in a pasture and looked down to see a skunk tensed up and the tail was straight in the air 15 feet away. I froze and slowly backed away. Another step and I would have been sprayed.

SPRAY AND WASH, our dog used to get sprayed on regular basis(never learned his lesson I guess), my mom figured out that if you spray em down with Spray and Wash and let it sit awhile and then wash it out it works really well. Definitely was the best solution we ever came up with. Just make to sure to cover their eyes when spraying I'd imagine they wouldnt enjoy that to much.

You might try this.

Austinite Philip Wells is a longtime bird-dog guy, so he would have to be well-acquainted with sprayed dogs. Just as some dogs can't resist sticking their noses back into a bunch of porcupine quills, some never get over the urge to jump start a hunt by tangling with any skunk they come across.

Wells says he had one particularly bad situation when the dog was so smelly after being sprayed that the entire dog trailer had to be moved away from camp. The only thing he had on hand as a possible remedy was baby powder, so he tried it.

"By sheer luck, desperation, and the lack of anything else to try, I put on a pair of throwaway' rubber examination gloves and rubbed my dog with a full canister of Johnson's baby powder ... I rubbed the powder all over her, making sure that I got it all the way to her skin; then I emptied the rest of the powder inside her trailer compartment," Well recounts.

Dogs hell. I got personally sprayed last Tuesday night coming out of my building after midnight (located on 290 east side of Austin - quarter end closing the books). Sucked big time. Did the tomato thing via pasta sauce and just chucked my clothes. Also chucked laptop bag and couple of things in my laptop bag like my mp3 player charger.

Not cool.

The skunk spray shampoos they sell at the pet stores have enzymes in them that are supposed to break down the odor causing proteins. If I remember correctly, these enzymes were developed by our Fightin Texas Aggies. Again, don't expect miracles, but it should help considerably, and pet stores aren't going to sell something that would burn/hurt you or your pets. Good luck. Better your dogs than mine!
