Is there any cowboy hat etiquette in Vegas (I am staying at Mandalay Bay, never been there before)? Leaving tomorrow and was just curious. Keep in mind that the PBR Finals begin tonight.

I stayed at the Bellagio during the NFR and damned near everyone in the casinos that week had hats on.

It's the fall... you should wear felt.

Oh, and I will be there next month for the NFR... with my felt.

Wearing a hat in the hotel lobby is fine. Please take it off when you enter the resturant.

"Hat off in the house"

Bad luck to leave a any hat on a bed...need all the help you can get in Sin City.

When setting the hat down the hat should be resting on it's crown (upside down basically).

Labor Day to Memorial Day= Felt
Memorial Day to Labor Day= Straw

Ok, well thanks for some of the fashion advice and proper way to remove and set the hat down. Ducks, you pretty much answered my question. Also didn't know how fancy MB was; my parents stayed at Bellagio and didn't like because they thought it was too fancy, didn't know if MB was the same way.

By the way, just a heads up if you're ever in Buckhead (Atlanta) don't wear your cowboy ANYWHERE!!!

I thought white after labor day was for women and a man should just refrain from straw (black or white felt) during the winter months

Nothing says class like a black straw hat. I'm also a big fan of the Toby Keith, Drunk Coed Spring Break, straw hat.

I'm of the view that if my personal style choices aren't good enough for someone else: F'em!

That reminds me, I need a new straw hat for winter. Felt sucks.

From what I have observed, the people that go by the Summer-Straw/Winter-Felt rule, are pretty much "Rexol Rangers" anyway.

I wear felt year round

Thanks FEGuide, I will pass that on to all the 3rd and 4th generation cowpersons I know. They will be shocked to know they have been wrong for so many years...

While I was stationed in california, I was rudely told that I shouldn't wear a straw hat in the winter. I stepped back to get a good look at his cockroach killers, straight leg levis, oversize belt buckle on a braided belt, Garth Brooks flame shirt and bull rider creased black felt hat, and told him that it was 90 degrees outside and I will wear whatever damn hat I feel like.

These people have always pissed me off. If it is cold, yes I will wear a felt. If it is 90 degrees in the winter, I will darn sure wear a straw and there is nothing that any Calvin Klein "cowboy" can do about it!

I never heard the felt/straw rule until my buddy, a drugstore cowboy/goat roper from dallas who has never even seen a cow, corrected me.

I always thought the idea was more that rain or melted sleet or snow runs right through a straw hat and down onto your face. felt tends to run it out to the brim once it gets saturated.

The funny part is, they don't make many felt sombreros for vaqueros, but they do make both felt and straw fedoras for mafioso.

Dang FS.

Rexol = Failed

Maybe during your days of hunting in the Panhandle you should have actually looked at an drugstore or two while there. You may have noticed the spelling.

I've always heard the rule, but could care less. I tend to be a human radiator, I'm going to wear whatever is comfortable.--Granted, to wife's chagrin, this is always my rule regardless of the situation.

Hats are uncomfortable to me. (and I own 3 felt and 2 straw and a collection of "vacation/fishing" hats) I only wear them in the sun. I see people driving their pickup truck with their cowboy hat on and I just dont understand how they can keep that hat on all day long.
rab79

They practice by riding in the sun all day long.

hahaha... I am not judging but if I go too long, first my forehead hurts, and then temples. I'm sure somebody would tell me that I am not spending enough on a quality hat. Maybe not. I even have one felt with no band in it at all and I kinda like it during the winter.

Like I said I wear felt year round. Much more durable than straw and rain/snow won't ruin them. It goes on as I leave in the morning comes off at meals and in the evening when I come in. Also when throw at a cows face it allows you to get away and then you can recover your hat knock it back out none the worse for it. But I also have nothing against straws just not for me.

I'm by no means a cowboy. I've ridden plenty of horses over the years. I even worked cattle...once. But for the most part I'm just a guy who wears hats because, well, we just grew up wearing them. Part of being a Texan I guess.

With that out of the way (and with you guys talking about "Rexol Rangers" and 'Drugstore Cowboys" the surefire 'tell' that you're dealing with someone trying way to hard (i.e. the guy in the flaming Garth Brooks shirt mentioned above) is when they refer to it as a "Cowboy Hat". I don't know about the rest of you, but it's just a "hat". Just like we wear boots, not "Cowboy Boots". Oh well, off the soapbox, that's just a really big pet peeve of mine.

really?

Allen, you also might not be wearing them enough to "break it in." Hats can be a lot like a good pair of boots and aren't really comfortable until they've been worn awhile. I don't wear a "cowboy" hat as I think they look silly on girls (unless rodeoing or showing), but every guy I've ever dated wears em. It's true for baseball caps too - which most summers I live in!

It has been several years since my hats retired to the top shelf of my closet, but back in the day when I wore them I pretty much wore whatever suited me at the time and didn't worry about what anyone else thought or what the "rules" were. If it was hot I wore straw and if it was cold I wore felt. These days about the only time I wear a hat is when I'm hunting, fishing or going to an Aggie football game...and even then it's a ball cap and not a cowboy hat.

I still wear boots on a daily basis though. Always have and probably always will.

Catelena hatters - they will set you up right. BTW felt is fine all year round, only drugstore cowboys follow that rule.

I've never understood social etiquette rules period. My wife tried to convince me that you have to do this or that the first few years of marriage, and then gave up. I think she ended up respecting me more for staying my ground on the topic. I could care less what someone else thinks of what I wear. Do what is comfortable and right for you.
