Anybody ever hunt dove out at the LBJ Grasslands? A buddy and I are thinking about going after work this week. We've never been up there and aren't sure where to go and how to get in. Also, it seems that, per the USFS website, we don't need a publich hunting permit unless we're on the Caddo Grasslands. Is that correct?

Any advice y'all can give me is appreciated.

The last time I hunted up there it didn't require a special permit, last year. I pretty much grew up hunting out there.

There are a lot of random pastures. If you get out on some of the smaller, isolated pastures, you can actually find pretty decent hunting. Get map at the USFS office in town. My favorite areas are usually the individual pastures up near Greenwood. I've killed some doves, turkey and a couple decent bucks out there.

Call the USFS office in Decatur and they can give you the scoop. You'll definitely need a map of the area, since the USFS areas are mixed in with private land.

We've got the big map. Buddy got it from one of his co-workers. I guess we'll just look for a place to park and hike in far enough to get past anybody else that might be out there. Hopefully it won't be too crowded on a week night.

My experience is that pressure on public ground goes WAAAY down after the opening weekend and on weekdays.

Yesterday we saw no less than 200 dove hunters. This morning I saw 1.

Opening weekend of pheasant season, you can't even get to Western Kansas because of all the traffic coming out of Johnson County (our Plano or Kingwood). 2nd weekend (or during the week), you're hunting by yourself.

What you say about Western Kansas is no less than true. I grew up hunting between Leoti and Marienthal and out near Sharon Springs. Opening weekend the "amber waves of grain" turn into acres upon acres of hunter orange.

Find a tree line that leads to a tank. I mainly duck hunted out there when I lived in DFW. I have a good spot if anyone is interested PM me, but I won't post publicly.

I tried dove hunting a few times but was mainly scouting for duck season and didn't shoot many. Saw quite a few, but I didn't nail down their flight pattern so mainly saw them out of range. If you see other hunters, I would talk to them and set up 60 yards away perpendicular to the flight path. It helps when you have more hunters.

Good luck!
