There is a guy out of Fairfield who has a bunch of land I have used for a good day hunt. I don't have his name or any contact information readily available, but I will see if I can find it. Last time I went which has been a few years ago, there were a lot of birds.

they arent exactly canned dude, I am the guide there, thanks for insulting me and my family.

What we do is release flight conditioned birds that are raised in a huge flight pen (bout the size of a football field) that see humans for the first time that day. they are fed at night by people wearing all black.

after that we rely on the dogs (and i promise you my year and half brittany and i will work our asses off to find them all) to do the work, i have a general idea where they are, but i have chased birds that were over .5 miles away from where they were released.

On top of that after having done this for over 6 years, some of the birds are finally surviving the summer and we are seeing signs of broods.

if you dont know, dont talk cause quite often your putting your foot in your mouth. I have never had a group leave without huge smiles on their faces and its getting to the point that all of our customers are repeats, luckily they are bringing others with them, so we are still growing.

we dont have high fences or ceilings and we dont clip the wings. that is the definition of a canned hunt. we have just about 1000 acres to hunt on. believe me when i say if your not a good shot your not going to get anything, and no we are not going to refund you for your poor shooting.

My dad is a registered 4-h and NRA coach and we will help you if that is true. we want you to have a great time. its in our best interest.

every hunt comes with sporting clays, fishing, guides, dogs, pictures, cleaning, and packaging for $175 a gun

and if you just want to use the property to train your dog, we offer a discount, believe me when i say your going to need a dog to find anything, even these "canned" birds.

Unless you are hunting totally wild birds that were not bred or raised by humans, that, to me, qualifies as a canned hunt. Sorry.

When Dick Cheney can go out and shoot 70+ quail and one lawyer in a day you can call it anything you want other than quail hunting.
Impatient Angler
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You could go to the ranch where Cheney shot his buddy tomorrow morning and kill 70 birds by 10 am even without a dog. I don't know how long it would take to shoot a lawyer, but the birds are a sure bet in that area this year.

I do not want a guided hunt. I want to hunt wild quail, camp, build a fire, cook a steak, and drink massive quantities of beer.

I have nothing against guides but real hunters clean their own birds.

Outlaw,

Don't listen to these punks, your kind of hunts are prefectly legit and I love them. Can I bring my dog and put him down with yours? He needs some work and I really want to make sure he is honoring.

With the LACK of quail in the last 8 years the only way keep him trained is on these hunts. It is as close to the real thing as you can get.

yeah, my brother is actually a semi pro trainer on the field trial circuit if that interests you, his price is $400 a month (125 a weekend and it includes you being trained as well), if not we let you buy the birds from us and go have your own fun on our place at a discounted rate

his email is schudaddy_07 at hotmail.com
my dad's is schubros2hunt at yahoo.com
mine is cisco.kschumann at gmail.com

Old Town I don’t know of any day leases but last fall I did some scouting around the LBJ Grasslands outside Decatur. I didn’t see any quail but I saw some pretty good looking habitat. You might give the public hunting land a try or see if any of the privately owned farms inside the Grassland offer day leases.

The LBJ website:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/texas/recreation/caddo_lbj/caddo-lbj_gen_info.shtml

As to the side track this thread has taken, I started quail hunting when I was twelve (I’m over 30 now ). My Grandfather hunted quail, my Dad hunts quail, and my Uncle helped found the Northern Kentucky Chapter of Quail Unlimited (where I grew up). For many, many years I never got to hunt with a dog. We would always “beat the brush” so to speak. The first time I got to hunt quail with a dog I felt like I was cheating and it wasn’t “real” hunting. Over the years it’s gotten harder and harder to find “wild” quail for reasons that most quail hunters know.

I had the opportunity to hunt with Kyle’s Dad (Mike) yesterday and I can say that it felt every bit like quail hunting to me. The birds didn’t think to much about being shot at and did their best to avoid it (which wasn’t too hard given my shooting ability). More importantly, I felt the same connection to my family history that I always do when I get to chase Mr. and Mrs. Bob. Maybe that’s too sappy for some of you but it’s why I’ll always pick quail hunting (“real” or otherwise) over any other hunt.

I’ve lived in Texas for ~7 years and I can count the number of quail hunters I’ve met on one hand. To me that reflects the sad current state of quail hunting. Hopefully in the future “real” quail will be found in every fence line, brush pile, and clump of grass across the country but it won’t be any time soon. Until then I’m glad that there are people like Kyle and his Dad who are doing their best to promote quail hunting and introduce new people to the sport.

If you don’t want to hunt raised birds then don’t do it. However, I don’t understand why you would jump on a fellow Ag and his Dad (also an Ag) to promote your beliefs.

Beretta O/U, I’m sure Kyle will answer but his Dad said yesterday that folks can bring their own dogs if they would like. I had a great time, will hopefully get to go back, and would recommend their operation if you’re interested in quail hunting.

There is a guy who offers basically what outlaw offers in Montgomery. Just East of Navasota, Price is his last name. You can also buy his quail for release on your own property. Whatever they are they fly, we bought 20 but they didn't covy for crap after being in the field 6 hours.

Pen raised birds have a large importance in our recreation. It introduces people to quail hunting who would not otherwise ever get a chance to enjoy it.

I have been hunting quail for 36 out of my 41 years of life. I did not carry a gun until I was 9. But I have consistently had bird dogs and have hunted quail during all of these years.

Canned hunts (sorry, I know there are some outfits better than others. But that is just what they are-- canned) they are needed in populated areas where the natural habitat has basically been destroyed.

As a kid, I walked out the back door and started shooting birds in less than 100 yards. I lived in Childress and only had to drive a few miles to the quail grounds. Now I drive 6.5 hours to Coleman to hunt them.

I am not too big on pen raised birds. And I know that the quail guru from A&M, Dr. Thornberry, was one of the main proponents for pen raised birds being in a habitat such as the one earlier described (no human contact). He and I have spent a few hours in the quail fields together and if he says it works, then I believe him.

I am pretty lucky to have family land that still has a thriving quail population. I hunt them every year, but this year didn't even put a dent in them.

I have family land too. And it is the worst year we have had in a long time. And last year was really bad too.

the guy near navasota is pretty high priced, know the guy, like him, i just do it better and cheaper. hunting with him is like a race, who can kill the most birds the fastest and get done. we are full day, go at a decent clip, try and kill everything group. speaking of which the last 5 hunts i have run we have seen woodcocks. have killed a couple of them thinking they were quail until we saw the beaks.
outlaw08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
ill have to look up Dr. Thornberry as we are starting to see birds survive but the instinct to raise a brood isnt there and we have seen nests in the fields but dont know how they do due to fireants and other varmints, the worst thing of all is coastal grass though. its too thick for them to borrow in and produces no seed. that is what truly exterminated quail in central Texas if you ask me
andyboz
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree, as an entomologist; the whole "fire ants killed them all" excuse is one of the many reasons. Small ecosystem changes such as the rangeland they live in is what seems to impact them more.

About the guy in Montgomery, I didn't think it was that over priced. and he went as slow as I did, I would never let the guide dictate my walking speed. Mind stating your prices?

175 a package which includes one of the following,

6 pheasants
10 chukar
20 quail

we recommend 3 men hunts and require 1 package a person. extra packages can be purchased for 125. we consider ourselves to be specialist in father son hunts as that is what we do the most of. kids under 15 hunt free with a paying adult.

that is a full day guided hunt, with dogs, cleaning, sporting clays, fishing, cleaning, packaging, and pictures.

the only thing that is not included is lunch, a gun, or ammo, and we have been known to lend a gun if needed and sometimes have ammo for sale.

www.schubros2hunt.com for the entire picture if i forgot anything

If you would like to put a sign on your fence for us we will more than likely work out a deal that may include free hunting. especially if your near austin or houston or san antonio, and own property on a major highway

Wildcatag - Thanks for the lead.

I think that pen birds are just groovy. But, that is not the type of hunting I want to do.

I don't mind paying to hunt. I just don't want to pay someone to hunt for me.

well with us your paying the dogs really, cause i could never find the birds in how dense our cover is this year, that wet summer has really hurt in the fact that our fields are too thick to walk through now

Went quail hunting two weekends ago in the panhandle. Busted about 20 coveys. Loved watching the dogs work. Very good company. A weekend to remember.

P.S. The 28 gauge seemed like a good idea, but apparently I was over confident.
outlaw08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
if you wanna hear overconfident, i had the hip shooting world record holder and the sporting clays national champion and one of their good shooting friends come out and hunt pheasants with bow and arrows. the arrows were of course big flu flu arrows that were easy to find. they got 6 out of 18 that day. it was crazy

I don't whether Outlaw's hunts are canned or not. But, when you ride out to the field in the same vehicle as the birds, you're probably on a canned hunt.

Sometimes people want to hunt certain birds and do not have the time/means to go where the birds are. It seems to me that Outlaw and his company have spent a lot of time and effort to ensure that it is not a canned hunt and that is great.

That being said, it is not for me. I'd rather not get a single bird on a wild hunt than my limit on anything less.
