I'm sorry for using my spinning gear while you are the only enlightened one who can truely experience fishing...

It pissed him off even more that I had spinning reel on a fly rod (doubles as my crappie pole when I kayak).

The fact I was using powerbait and not flies pissed him off too after I reeled in my third fish... (fishing below Beaver Lake in AR).

Because people trout fishing with spinning gear are notorious for ruining the fishing for those fly fishing. Unless you are trying to catch a couple to eat, using powerbait is pretty chickens**t in the eyes of most fly fishermen. That pretty much sums it up I think.

I was doing my best to make sure every fish was gut hooked and had their gills ripped out removing the hook before I released them....

(jk, although I was using bait I've found bream cricket hooks to work wonders over the typical tiny trout hooks in keeping the fish from being gut hooked).

By the way golfer it doesn't matter to me either way Only times it pisses me off is wwhen you catch people doing it in conservation waters where it is not allowed and you can't keep fish. Seems to me that really New Mexico is the place where it actually poses a problem with all the drunk indians using powerbait in protected waters.

I was using bait (in an area where it's ok), but I was also going to great lengths to ensure I was not injuring fish.

I did get some dirty looks by a couple fly fisherman though.

(btw, the only outdoors activities that even remotely "suck ass" is hunting/fishing and they aren't even that bad)

After reading those news reports about Somerville, its probably best we didnt catch any whites out there. And, now we know why there aren't any fish in the lake...they probably mutated, walked out and are now cooking steak at the Somerville Steakhouse.

Golfer, I suspect MA has it right, many (not all) spinfishermen just come through and beat the water and get the trout all spooked.

Having said that, as long as you're obeying all applicable regulations, you've got as much right to be there as they do, and they just have to get over it.

I don't own fly fishing gear, but I have been known to tie a fly on light spinning gear to catch perch and bass. Does that count?

Does wading the salt flats with topwater plugs count as real fishing? I guess not. That's cheating, too, right? What about trolling with ballyhoo or mackerel for Blue Marlin? Guess that's unsportmanlike.

Go back to the Gyn Board. We really don't value your opinions, and any attempt to improve this board will really be pretty pointless since it's the best board on Texags.

They are just pissed because they dropped $1000 on a bunch of crap so they can look the part of a dedicated lifelong fly fisherman and you are outcatching them with $30 worth of gear, and by golly, when you both bought fishing licenses to help in part pay for trout stocking, their contribution was somehow worth more than yours...

Seriously, fly fishing is fun, and there are times when it is the only thing that they are biting, but it isn't some sacred art. When I'm meat fishing, which is usually the case for trout, I'm staring right back at them thinking "dumbass, you could be eating good tonight if you weren't so stubborn"... heh.

I would be hard pressed to be able to justify comparing the fly fishing/spinning reel argument versus the bow/rifle hunting argument.

Fly fishing is a lot of fun but a pain when in tight quarters and windy conditions. The main difference is style. Depending on the conditions, either way could be considered easier or "sportier".

fried rattlesnake is allsome...

I love rattlesnakes but have no problem killing them at will. I've been to many a rattlesnake round-up in which there were thousands of captured rattlers that ended up on a bbq. I don't think it's possible to hunt these out of existence.

I wanted to try fly fishing, but I could never find a hook small enough for the flies to bite down on.

I planned on doing catch and release. Cleaning and eating flies is not my idea of fun.
