Which would include me. Here's a good post on the arf.com site that explains a lot. Read it all, follow the links and read those posts. It covers a lot of the questions I've had and that I've seen asked around on this board lately.

I think Log, PP and I are still more than willing to assist. Sometimes the guys at arfcom are *******s so don't take their attitudes personally.

First you have to know that there is 223 ammunition, and 5.56. The 5.56 is loaded to higher pressures for the military. When a barrel is manufactured the maker cuts the chamber he wants for it. A 223 chamber is slightly shorter in, and provides slightly more accuracy when used with 223 ammunition. This can cause a build up of too much pressure in the barrel if 5.56 ammunition is fired in a barrel with a 223 chamber.

That is true, but Bushmaster only chambers in 5.56.

Good! Cause I still have lots of questions. By the way deats, I started reading reviews on the eotech and aimpoint and found an alarming quantity of complaints about the eotech battery life and faults in operation. I'm switching over to aimpoint but haven't yet decided which specific model to get.

Aimpoint question:
The only significant differences between their optics that I can find is battery life. I've listed the below with mounts. For those of you in the know, what other advantages are there between the below optics? The only major advantage I see is that the M4 will take ordinary ( easy to find ) AA batteries. Also, can I do much better on pricing by shopping this around?

Comp M2 - 10K hr bat life on lithium
$540 with Larue mount

Comp M3 - 50K hr on lithium
$570 with Larue mount

Comp M4 - 80K hr on ANY AA battery
$702 with Larue mount

Comp ML2 - 10K hr on lithium
$470 with Larue mount

Comp ML3 - 50K hr on lithium
$524 with Larue mount

Infantry...

I'm not sure what wrong info you got. Basically, its not a good thing to fire 5.56 NATO pressure ammo in a SAAMI spec .223 chamber.

Will it blow up a gun in good condition? No. It will accelerate wear of all moving parts and in a weapon with questionable headspace, could become a danger to seperate a case head. Accuraccy will also suffer.

In an emergency, I would use if if I needed too. But otherwise, I would avoid it.

Generally rifles with .223 chambers are hunting weapons designed to yield the best possible accuracy. Military ammo is not designed to be match accurate. Its designed to do other stuff first...

FHKPLEX03,

I have two CompM's and a 551.A65 Eothingy. They both have their strengths.

Aimpoints are more rugged and with the flip caps are lower maint if you are doing stuff like running around on the four wheeler getting dusty or worse...flip the caps down and...nice clean lenses. EO is not that tolerant of dirt and dust. Its hard to clean the lens in a hurry too.

Battery life is where its at...either is a good choice. My 551 uses the N battery. 200 hours, no big deal, I bought it becuase it was much shorter. For most the 552 is a better deal (yes, the non-night vision versions are cheaper but, trust me, one day you will be able to afford NV glass and boy is it fun!!)

Now as for speed, the EO is faster on targets and in transitions from one target to the next. You dont see SWAT guys with CompM's...of course they dont throw their guns out of helicopters or roll in the dirt all day (and night) either.

The M4 is not worth the jack. I've shot one and am not interested. Buy a used CompM and EO for what that thing runs...

As always, YMMV.

Bingo! Other than the shooting range, primary use would be strapped to the 4 wheeler out in the hill country. I can't see myself ever deer hunting with it but there are lots of hogs on our lease and they won't always be within pistol range. It'd be nice to have an easy to access quick aiming rifle shooting less $ ammo compared with pulling my deer rifle out of its protective case and struggling to find a small moving target ( in heavy brush ) through a minimum 4X scope.

I'm actually heading to the lease this weekend so it'd be nice if I could pick up an aimpoint and mount, sight it in, and be ready to go before Friday. Anyone know a good place in Houston ( or Conroe ) that isn't too pricey? Pruetts and TX Tact Gear are a bit pricey on pretty much all their gear.

Thanks deats, I've got the list of Houston area distributors already. I was just hoping someone might already know where I'm likely to find the best price. I've already looked at a few websites and have a price comparison spreadsheet going.

Like deats said, I'm more than willing to help out. There's no such thing as a stupid question regarding AR's. I asked enough of them myself when I was first getting into them.

On a side note, anyone up for a Dallas area build party? I've got the tools.

sorry if this has been covered...

what's the difference between pre-ban and ban?

everyone seems to use pre-ban as a sales point, but i can't tell any difference!

Nothing anymore.

They banned certain evil features in 1994, but it sunset, aka expired, in 2004. You couldn't have more than two of these evil features on a gun that was produced after the ban date, or it would be considered an illegal assault weapon. The features were 1.) pistol grip, 2.) detachable magazine, 3.) collapsible stock, 4.) bayonet lug, and 5.) a flash hider. AR manufacturers got around this by eliminating the bayonet lug and flash hider and putting fixed stocks on their rifles. The ban also banned hi-cap mags. But like I said, the ban has sunset. The only way it could possibly affect you is if you live in one of the states that adopted in perpetuity the federal ban, i.e. they made it state law that doesn't sunset. This is why some people still want to get pre-ban rifles.
