82aggieff1: Is this the place you are talking about?

I'll swing by there tomorrow and take a look. As for sunglasses - will any pair of good glasses work? I have some Oakleys and a pair of polorized fishing glasses - both have croakers to keep them on my head. I guess I can take these along and rent goggles if they don't work out.

That's the place. I live in Brenham now, but when I lived near there I would go once a week beginning about now since so much new stuff comes in.

I believe polarized glasses are ok, but you got to maket sure they protect your eyes from the UV rays. I'd scrimp on anything but the sunglasses. We are going to Steamboat this year. It will be my first time there, and the boys fist time ever to ski.

Have fun,

The furniture in the bluebird place looks nicer than any of my stuff!

82aggieff1, how much do the ski clothes run there? My husband and I are going to Reno in January and neither one of us have ski clothes. It might be worth making a trip to Houston one saturday. We're trying to do this as cheap as possible because if we don't like it, then we're not out much.

Sunglasses will work fine if its not snowing. If it starts snowing real hard...you're going to want goggles to be able to see.

I skied in jeans, a t-shirt and a wind breaker last spring at Red River. It was sunny, the highs were probably 60 degrees and I was only doing blues with my five year old son. There was no chance of falling and it was too hot for anything else. Other than the obligatory apre ski snowball fights, I had no problems keeping dry.

I always take goggles in my pack but wear sunglasses on the slopes - if the snow really starts coming down you're going to need those goggles. Goggles are also cheap ($20 range)

Polarized glasses are actually not preferred for skiing. They end up hiding some of the changes in snow texture between good, bad and ice.

Probably won't make a difference if this is your first time though.

All of that being said, I hate skiing in sunglasses because they don't block out the wind.

carmel,
I purchased a ski coat, oh man I forget who makes it now, but a good name brand, and it was down, for my 10 yo son for $15. Also purchased ski bibs for both boys for $10 each and a pair of snow boots for $2.50. He'll grow out of them fast, so those are a one time wear. It is much higher quality than other resal shops. I'm still wanting to go back there to look at the furniture.

I lived in Brenham for a few years and my parents had ranches in Phillipsburg, Burton, and Independance from '63 to '79. Why?

Yes, they have adult ski clothes..I just needed them for my boys only.

HECUBUS: I just remembered talking/texting to you about it several years ago on one of the boards. I lived in the Independence area too. I have since moved into the city of Brenham.

I remember. I was bragging that we almost never had to buy hay in Washington County or maybe something about getting plenty of rain.

This past year has been a Washington County like year in central texas. Congratulations on living in Brenham. I liked the little house we had on Mulberry Street. Brenham is a nice place to reside.

Yeah, that's about the dumbest thing I've heard polarized is the best type of eyewear on the hill.
I'd reccomend academy for cheap durable ski wear, I got about a full seaon out of a $25 pair of academy pants, ended up ripping the crotch out but I've done that to 3 pairs of $200+ pants for work.

Yeah, I like it in town, we moved into the newer neighborhood across from Holt Park of N. Park. I did get plenty of hay this year. Even cut hay in the three acres around the house!

Where are you going? If its Colorado you will be able to buy anything you need when you get there from the local Walmart. I highly recommend a neck gator and quality socks. Christmas time on the slopes can be a little chilly. Please do not just wear jeans.

I'll have to remember the neck gator. Still on the search for good socks.
