Ha, what has Denna done to you guys?

The way I see it, if and when the 3rd one is ever written, I'll most likely forgot everything from book 1 and book 2 and I can listen to them all back to back to back. If not, I'll still have forgotten what's in the 1st and 2nd.

Well... Kvothe is too much of a **** for anything to bother him, so I must be infuriated for him.

Rothfuss is a putz. George R Martin wannabe.

Also I read all of martins books before it became a hit so I will continue to hold my nose up above all of the late comers.

I will add that David Weber and John Ringo mil sci fi stuff is pretty good. March upcountry, Posleen series etc. Just nerd power fantasy slaying foul xenos.

Speaking of foul xenos, the Horus Heresy is good. Skip the novellas and anthologies.

So those books got better? The first one felt like I was reading a teen drama, and I didn't continue to the second. Did all the "I have a crush, but she doesn't like me…or does she like me? Hmm…what does he have that I don't? I'm just an ugly loser. She doesn't like me. Woah as me, I'm gonna pout now" crap that was spewed every 5 pages stop past the first book? Cool premise, but good god man, grow a pair and stop *****ing and acting like a 12 year old girl.

Eh. I didn't catch much of that. The follow on books were all pretty good.

You might try the offshoots then.

Same canon, but different point of view. Chad is sorta a frat guy but I like characters fighting with a katana.

Not sure how that book could ever be turned into a movie, but could be interesting.

Makes more sense as a series

Dang. First time I've seen Weber ever mentioned here on TA I think. I cut my teeth on his earlier works. Honor Harrington mostly but March Upcountry was great too along with the Dahak series. Ringo has always been a little hit or miss for me though I respect his work in general. I think the one and only old school newsletter I ever subscribed to was Baen Publishings. Ah, the good ole days…

Any other Dennis Taylor fans out there?

I'm a huge fan of his Bobiverse series and some of his other standalones, like Roadkill.

The Quantum Earth series is interesting as well.

I've read David Weber...in the 80s.

I LOVED the John Ringo series where modern tech failed and everyone who was in VR fell out into real world as their avatar. I recall it tapered off and ended with a thud, but it was badass the first several books.

Read Bobiverse #1. Was totally bored with it and never went back. JMO though.

I will highly recommend NOT reading Dies The Fire series. I regret wasting deployment hours reading those books.

Never made it past book two myself and nothing I have heard since has made me regret that decision.

Cool premise though. Even if a stretch of belief is needed

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Ray Porter (who did amazing with Project Hail Mary btw).

A fantastic narrator probably increases the enjoyment of the books -- see Jeff Hayes with Dungeon Crawler Carl as well.

I could see that potentially helping with Bobiverse, specifically.

Yes, he gives a different voice to every "Bob". "Homer" sounds like Homer Simpson, and Guppie sounds just lilke Admiral Ackbar. I've become a fan of just him as a narrator and will listen to novels he narrates just on his reputation alone now.

Listening to DCC currently. Had read one and two in the past. REALLY enjoying Jeff Hayes' work. Has to be one of the best readers/voice actors I have listened to. Was almost shocked to research and find all the voice were him and not a cast. His talent plus the humor of the writing his really enjoyable!

I don't do audio, almost as a rule, and I adore the DCC audiobooks. Jeff Hayes and his work on it is phenomenal.

Working through Wheel of Time now. Next goal is Malazan. Anyone read it? It seems like…a lot.

Malazan is incredible and, yes, it's a lot. I read it straight through for two years. Nothing else got read. Almost have to dedicate yourself to it because its scale is massive with many character's.

You will likely be lost as hell after the first book. Just stick with it and it comes together.

For sci-fi, if you want an entire series, The Expanse is great. Book 1 is Leviathan Wakes. It starts as a bit of a Noir mystery, but then turns more action/political thriller.

For sci-fi, I'm going to make some recommendations that I don't see much anymore because they are a little older now.

I'm putting these in rough order of quality (IMO), but all are incredible:

  • The Night's Dawn Trilogy - Peter F Hamilton (stands on its own; not in Commonwealth universe)
  • The Commonwealth Saga - Peter F. Hamilton
  • Revelation Space Series - Alastair Reynolds
  • The Dreaming Void - Peter F. Hamilton (this one is in Commonweath universe; read after the Commonwealth Saga)

Anyone made it into Iron Gold in the Red Rising series? I'm nearing halfway through and I'm struggling with it. The multi-POV I just don't know that it works for me. I do see it is the lowest ranked of the 6 books so far on goodreads, but I just don't care about the ancillary stories so far. I know they have to lead to a single road at some point, but its a grind to get through some of them.

Another enthusiastic vote for Ray Porter as an audiobook narrator.

Agreed whole-heartedly. While not SFF, he does a great job narrating Raymond Chandlers Marlowe novels.

All the payoffs start coming in Dark Age. Light Bringer crushes it - probably the best book of all 6.

Waiting patiently for Red God. Also they're making a movie out of Red Rising.

Here's a few I reread/listen to over and over

Fantasy:
- Wheel of Time is one of the GOATs
- Mystborn and Stormlight Archive
- Malazan Book of the Fallen Series
- The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfus are amazing books (FINISH the last book, already)

SciFi
- Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson
- Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold : Space Opera
- The Expanse by James S.A. Corey : Great books and TV series

PSA: For anyone who has not read bold....DON'T. It's not going to get finished. It's a joke now and the author hates his readers. Broad agreement here.

Much less agreement...I thought Mistborn was extremely average and a slog to get through.

Long sagas are great but I don't really have time to invest in them any longer. Single novels or at the most a duology are my preference these days.

For fantasy, I will always recommend Guy Gavriel Kay, although his worlds are not filled with dragons or fireballs. The Lions of Al-Rassan is my favorite book of his; it's clearly inspired by the Reconquest of Moorish Spain although the star, sun, and moon worship religions are analogs of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. In fact, I don't remember a single scene with "magic" in it, so maybe it shades more to historical fiction on a very Earthlike world.

Fantastic recommendation. GGK has some great books and you don't have to get stuck in a series for years.
