Switching to Ubuntu Linux

Finished my computer rebuild. I have a 9070XT GPU so to take advantage of it for some light local AI I have to use Linux because AMD's ROCm isn't well supported on Windows.

Gees this is a learning curve. I used Ubuntu a long time ago but only just to fart around in it to see what it was like. Trying to use this full-time is tricky. I'm so used to just clicking on an executable and having it install itself.

All of this command line stuff is driving me nuts. I just went through a tutorial installing Rocm and ComfyUI but after one reboot the system no longer loads. Apparently I did something wrong and have to reinstall the OS.

Anyone have any suggestions on good ways to learn the OS in terms of websites or best YouTube channels?

ChatGPT is your friend. Run Codex and it can even do the heavy lifting for you.

The days of having to figure all the nuance and esoteric stuff out is over.

Are you on actual Ubuntu, or a variant? You could try Linux Mint or one of the other Ubuntu based distros. I also do not like the default Ubuntu software manager but I'm in the command line all day at work so that's my preference.

Second the AI suggestion. It does a decent job with help.

You can still just download the installer and double click it to install if you want. Or, you can go to the software manager that's built in, find the app you want and install it that way. Very similar to the Windows store or the Apple store, just no account or payment needed. Or, you can use the command line. Eventually, you'll come to find it's much easier to just use the command line.

The GUI that base Ubuntu uses is Gnome, which I'm not a big fan of. Linux Mint Cinnamon version is a better choice over Ubuntu in my opinion. It's basically a more polished version of Ubuntu with a GUI that's more similar to windows in its window management.

Use it for a month as your daily driver. If you go back to Windows, you'll probably get frustrated with all the ads and prompts to use other MS services or enable co-pilot, and you'll switch back immediately.

One more vote for claude or chatgpt being helpful.

I also in general recommend Mint to people coming from Windows. But I really recommend because I hate SNAP. To many emergencies caused by snapd deciding to upgrade stuff that is in production environments that have breaking changes or incompatible defaults. No pure Ubuntu for me.
In reality I don't usually install any desktop. SSH and a shell if almost always gets me directly to what I need.

I kinda feel your pain. I'm trying to force myself to use Linux (just via virtual machine for now, but eventually I'll have to get rid of Windows 10). I've been leaning towards Fedora with the KDE desktop for mine. I won't call it seamless by any means, but with Google I also wouldn't call it painful. The Gemini AI mode in the google search does a pretty good job of answering my questions most of the time.

A close second was Zorin OS, which is an Ubuntu derivative. It probably has the better software manager, but I just keep gravitating towards Fedora. But it might be worth looking into if you're thinking of changing anyway.

I've been running my home server (media, print, etc) on Mint for the past 4 years and during that time have learned ALOT. I don't like Gnome as well as Cinnamon but I can use it.

Are you wanting it to act like a server or for you to replace Windows 11?

If server, then you should look at rocky, alma, or debian.

If Windows 11, Mint, Zorin, LMDE would be my choices.

And OMG has ChatGPT/Gemani made fixing weird things sooooo much easier than spending hours and hours of research and trial and experiment.

I usually just copy and paste from command line to AI to fix bugs now.

And if you must have a Windows app, you can use VirtualBox or Wine (for really basic ones).

Man I love Linux....using Arch and CachyOs for past year. Its my daily driver. Can also use Claude. I asked it previously, "make me a spreadsheet in pdf form of all the commands" and it did. Welcome back!
