Does anyone here use internet ready appliances?

Samsung is reported to have bricked a large number of refrigerators in South Korea on September 22 when a firmware update failed.

They can apparently repair them, but it will take time.

I don't understand the desire to make appliances internet ready.

My refrigerator is a bit more than 40 years old and is still running fine.

More of this:

And this is coming from a guy who has a high end LG TV.

I'm there with you, and I'm what most would call a big "tech" guy. I still believe in purpose driven hardware. A fridge should only keep food cool, with the biggest tangent to maybe dispense water and ice that have been cooled (but that still falls inside of the main function). There shouldn't be anything else with a fridge, and if there is, it shouldn't have the ability to have any impact on the primary function of a refrigerator. I NEVER buy samsung appliances. For a refrigerator, so far, I trust Whirlpool and Fridgeidare.

But I'm the same on any appliance, I don't want it to have an interactive screen or be internet connected. I want it to be designed to be as idiot proof as possible to last as long as possible.

Really wish one of the high end TV manufacturers would go back to just a TV and everything focused on the best quality picture and processing as possible.

I agree. I don't want my appliances connected to the internet. I don't need my fridge to show my calendar or talk to me with its version of an AI buddy.

The line is definitely starting to blur. Typically I only want internet connectivity for entertainment and productivity items. But there are more and more household items (robot vaccums for example) where connectivity is a key feature.

But a fridge is more like a tool and I don't need internet / updates for my tools.

With regards to all these home appliances spying on us... yeah, it pisses me off too, but I gave up on trying to care the moment we all started carrying 'always connected' computers, err, phones, with us 24 hours a day.

OT devices and OT security is the next billion dollar industry and I work in it at our manu centers. I only have my TV online, everything else at home is dumb or VLAN'ed off to block its Internet access.

Apparently you can buy a Bosch dishwasher that requires an app just to run a rinse cycle.

My Bosch dishwasher died and I replaced it with an internet version. Waste of $100. I have the App, but why would I search for my phone to start the DW when I can simply click the button. I guess the one benefit is I receive a notification when the clean cycle is finished. However, I don't act on the notification so I guess it's useless as well.

Now my Rachio sprinkler controller is life changing. Easier to schedule, make changes, and turn off from my phone. When checking and repairing sprinkler heads, I can turn it on / off right at the location.

I think I got a similar Bosch dishwasher. Thing didn't want to dry dishes. Apparently you have to set it to ultra dry (or whatever) plus sanitize, which you can only do from the app. Glad I figured that out because the wife was about to make me return it to the store for being defective.

A dishwasher requiring you to use their app to make it clean correctly is such total b.s.

We are coincidentally about to be in the market for a new dishwasher and fridge. Wife wants the Bosch 800 series which we've had Bosch in multiple homes. It's been a fine DW for us for years. I've never connected them to the internet because that is utterly stupid and unnecessary, but if y'all are saying that we will have to use the app to make it work then I'm redirecting our search. I'll look into that.

We are actually at Best Buy yesterday for different reason but looked at appliances while we there. We actually only saw one fridge model with an external digital display. All other models were traditional so it looks like IOT may have backed off from fridges for the most part. But I was looking at floor models and haven't done any online research beyond that. I did not see any wifi capability advertising on the fridges other than the one one with digital display, but I wasn't looking that hard at labels.

We're kind of in that in-between phase of the appliances getting the connectivity, but us still not being at a stage where the physical element can be automated.

Automated/app-enabled washing and drying cycles for dishes and clothes WILL be a useful feature when we finally figure out a way to automate the loading and unloading. But we're a pretty good ways from that still.

Kitchen sink -> dishwasher -> shelf COULD all be automated. Just not at a sane price point yet.

Ditto hamper -> washer -> dryer -> dresser.

Fridges in that middle zone of having rudimentary AI/camera detection, but eventually it should see you're running low on milk and order you more milk. But... we're not there yet.

My smart GE oven integrates seamlessly with Alexa, making daily cooking significantly more convenient whether I'm asking Alexa to preheat the oven from the kitchen or starting it remotely on my commute home.

For security, all of my IoT devices run on a dedicated Wi-Fi network and VLAN, completely segmented from the rest of my home network.

I also strongly agree with the previous recommendations for the Rachio sprinkler controller (and I'll include Ecobee thermostat).

Just replaced a microwave that was about 17 yrs old with a very similar one from the same brand. Most features about the same except there is a WiFi button it. Can't imagine a single possible use for it.

lol. So dumb.

Microwave use cases:
1. Punch in 30s and hit Start, or
2. Punch in 1m and hit Start.

Repeat above as necessary.

We unknowingly bought an induction range that you can control from an App. At first, I didn't think we would use it, but it is nice to start the oven on the way home from the kids' school/game/practices, etc. Or have a pot of soup simmering on the stove and change the temp on the way home so it is ready when we hit the door. It doesn't save much time, obviously, but the convenience is nice. The opposite is true too, no more worrying if we left the oven on after we left.

I can't really see a use case for a smart fridge, dishwasher, etc.

I have a Rachio sprinkler controller that I am very happy with; I need to pick up a Tempest weather station to connect to it so I get more accurate water times/rates.

I've heard that the modern AGA cookers that run on electricity can use an app to start them remotely. That could be a big help since I think that it takes two or three hours for them to reach operating temperature.

For those who aren't familiar with AGA cookers, they have traditionally been stoves that never turn off. You leave them on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I'm not sure, but I think the older ones running on heating oil, coal, gas, or firewood can take about six hours hours to reach operating temperature.

We have Thermador ovens with connection. It's life saving since the screen is too small to read, the knobs obnoxiously complicated, and the timer / chimes require you to be within 3ft to hear the damn thing.

I can almost guarantee you this was to get the dishwasher to meet government mandated energy standards. Government energy standards have pretty much ruined all appliances. The appliance companies love this as nobody can sell a good product anymore that works and it helps to take the blame off of them for making disposable products instead of products that last.

I'm sure this is the case. Government ruining stuff like they always do.

Rule of thumb

If you get a TV, never connect it to the Internet. Use Roku if you need smart features.

You're welcome

Even better, just hit the add 30 seconds until you hit 2m, who needs to hit start

I pretty much bought the same microwave, just latest version of GE Profile line. I feels like it is worse. Buttons are harder to press. Turntable seems clunky. Popcorn feature is worse. Have to deactivate the child lock. and of course a useless wifi mode.

It could be worse. It is being reported that cyber attacks are shutting down refrigerators at French supermarkets:

From https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/cyberattack-shuts-down-refrigerators-at-french-supermarkets/

Quote:

Attackers remotely defrosted refrigerators at multiple French supermarket chains overnight in a cyberattack that reportedly targeted Danfoss refrigeration controllers.

Victims include Intermarch, Cooprative U, Carrefour Market, Monoprix, Leclerc, and Super U, with French outlets reporting that the attack affected 250 to 350 stores, causing significant financial losses and food waste.

The threat actors hijacked refrigeration controllers running older versions of Danfoss control software on Sunday night and used them to raise supermarket refrigerator temperatures by triggering a built-in automatic defrosting system.
