Fun watch/listen. I got and still have a TI-85 in 1994 and then a HP 48G my freshman year at A&M in '96. Both were great, though I quickly learned to prefer the HP's RPN.

Fun walk down memory lane.

I still have my TI-83, 86, and 89 from my high school and college days, but it seems that none of them have survived being laid up. Guess I'll recycle them.

I've never heard of this podcast before but the topics look really interesting to me. Hopefully the hosts are good. I'm gonna give it a shot. Almost makes me wish I had a bigger yard to mow. Almost.

I believe there are some "tricks" you can do to wake them up. I remember having to do something similar with my old TI-83+.

Not a graphing calculator but here's a great calculator story for you.

When I started at A&M my dad was an engineer for TI so despite the business school telling incoming freshmen to get the HP-10B I got whatever model TI had that had the same functionality. I used that calculator all the way through A&M to my 2.53 GPA and my accounting degree.

Fast forward to my MBA at Texas State and I'm still using that same TI business calculator. I'm taking an economics class from what I'm pretty sure was Rain Man and he's showing us long hand solutions to the problems and models he's teaching then tells us we can use a calculator on the exams and he wants us to understand the math. So first exam comes and I'm using my TI calculator to solve a problem when I notice he's looking over my shoulder. He tells me to keep going so I finish the problem then he says, "That's the wrong answer. You did everything right but that's not the right answer. You need a new calculator and I would do the rest of the exam long hand if I were you."

So I did then went home and told my wife what happened and that I'd bombed the exam and I'm gonna have to drop this class and take it again. I got an 81 on that exam so I stayed in it and got a new business calculator. When the final came around I needed a 91 to get an A for the semester and me and my new calculator were 100% certain I'd gotten that 91. I got an 81.

A guy on The Ticket (sports radio in Dallas) told a story a while back: Growing up he always thought he used a Texas Instruments calculator because he lived in Texas. So for example, he assumed kids in Indiana used Indiana Instruments calculators. Only when he got to college did he finally understand that they were all TI.

That's pretty good. It's also funny to me how most everyone I talk to about TI thinks that all they make is calculators. That part of the business is something like less than 5% of their total revenue, but the rest of their products aren't consumer-facing so they might as well not exist.

I still have my TI-81 and TI-85. I was lucky enough to test out the TI-92 as my mother is a professor and knew someone in TI.

Somewhere I have the kit they sold to sync them to computers. I think the only ones I might grab for these days are my OLD TI-36. Other than that, I use the calc on the computer, excel, AI, etc.

I use this TI 84 clone app all the time. It has a great TVM function as well.

TI had (or maybe still has; the building is still there, I believe) a plant in Sherman near where I lived as a kid for a while, so I was familiar with the company. I didn't know everything they made, of course, but when I started using calculators in, I think, Jr. High (had that calc that you could spell words upside down!!), the TI brand was something I knew. The funny thing was, by the time we had moved to the DFW area, I was even more familiar with it because we passed at least 3 TI plants on any trip between DFW and Sherman on 75.

I don't recall where I came into contact with it, but I did at one time briefly use the TI-99 computer. When I was in late HS, a friend of my sister's worked at a small property management company in Oak Lawn and they bought a computer, which may have been the TI-99 -- but knew nothing about how to work it. I came in and set everything up though I really don't know if they ever used it much. They seemed impressed though I was faking my way through about half of it!!

RPN was vastly superior in my opinion. Does the podcast talk about how TI displaced HP?
