Disappointed it's basically just a reskin

And the visuals don't look great. Characters look weird and the lack of anti aliasing is a huge eye sore

Looking like I'll pass on this

I had to preorder the digital edition. Game comes out the day I have to leave for a long work trip and my ass won't be able to wait until I get back to pick it up

I'm of two minds on it currently.

On the one hand, I had gotten my hopes up for new additions to the game, such as the original Light Temple which got cut out of the original game, and maybe expanding out the map to be a bit bigger, new characters, side quests, etc.

On the other, OoT is still my favorite game of all time, and doing a faithful adaptation of my favorite game with modern day graphics, cutscenes, voice acting, etc, is a pretty massive win.

The visuals did throw me for a loop at first, as it looks a little too "Unreal" to me, like those videos that have been uploaded to Youtube the last few years. Slightly uncanny.

I guess I was expecting a bit more cel-shading, similar to the BOTW/TOTK visual style.

Will my switch pro controller work with the switch 2? I don't think I'm going to one $110 on a Zelda Switch 2 controller lol

Yeah, I agree 100% with all of this

Except for the voice acting. I can't stand that aspect

They work on Switch 2, but an odd/annoying quirk is that they can't power on the Switch 2 for whatever reason. You would have to power on the console itself.

That alone made me buy a Switch 2 pro controller. Luckily was able to sell my other one for like $20.

Just FYI, there are more videos on the Nintendo website than what was shown in the Zelda direct this morning.

Also, this guy is the OOT guy. Does a good job comparing scenes in trailer to actual game play in original game.

If you ever feel nostalgic for the original game, he does speed runs and randomizers (all chests randomized, for example).

This is for sure not just a reskin. There are similar aspects because it's the same game, but it is clearly rebuilt and redesigned. I've played through this game 50+ times, and I can immediately tell from the trailers it is not a reskin. Halo Campaign Evolved is a reskin.

They stated that it was intended to be a faithful re-creation.

What makes you think it's anything more than that? Halo Campaign Evolved had new mission. Granted, they weren't good, but that was more than just a reskin.

Yeah, there are *minor* differences, obviously the town being the big one based on just being in 3D and differences in NPCs, but I am not expecting any major changes (more dungeons, massive new secret areas, etc).

I would have much preferred a simpler style. Like you said, with Cell Shading they could have gotten closer to the source art material and it would have looked a LOT cleaner.

My biggest gripes with this game is that if you view it on a 4K TV, the image quality is the worst I've seen in a long, long time. They tried to crank up the fidelity but at a huge sacrifice of resolution and lack of anti aliasing along with all sorts of smeary artifacts.

It's plain ugly to look at. I much prefer how clear BOTW/TOTK look on the Switch 2 in comparison despite being simpler games.

You can easily tell how good the image quality looks on a 4K trailer

It's not compression artifacts, the game's engine is causing the aliasing and FSR fizzling noise

I think the art style looks fantastic. This is NOT simple reskin. They've literally reworked the entire world to look and feel so good.

If you think Halo Campaign Evolved was not a reskin but this is, I truly do not know what to tell you. The opposite is objectively true.

I know they added some awful new "prequel" missions to Campaign Evolved, but the actual campaign itself was just a reskin. It was literally the same game. Same dialogue. Enemies in the same places. Weapons in the same places. Exactly the same map layouts other than The Library.

It's somewhere in the middle of a 1:1 reskin and a full blown reimagining.

There's a lot of cool quality of life improvements, brand new UI, in addition to the new visuals and natural upgrades like Castle Town, some new terrain, and the new dialogue with voice acting.

But it's also closer to 1:1 than some of us would have wanted when they first announced the remake. Especially considering a 1:1 remake already exists on 3DS.

They definitely could have gone a little farther. Granted that probably would have added another year of development and bumped the price another 10-20 bucks.

That said, I definitely don't think the visuals look bad. Once I got used to the direction they took it, I think it looks pretty amazing. Especially in that gameplay video I linked above.

They are both reskins

Halo is less, due to the new levels added

Nothing like that here

This is a silly argument. What are you expecting? A completely different game? Should Death Mountain be to the left instead of the right, when leaving the forest? Should they have turned it into an open world MMO? What are you even arguing about?

It's an Ocarina of Time remaster. They have literally barely shown us much and that which they have looks reworked to be presented better with these graphics and this art style. Kokiri Forest looks so much cooler and it's not just the textures and bloom.

Some of yall will literally ***** about anything...

Some remakes are significantly changed or expanded. Look at Silent Hill 2 or FF7 or Persona games

They could have added the light temple, sky temple, or made the ice cavern into a dungeon since these were cut from the original

Not everyone is a fan of the art style either. Lots of divisiveness about the style they chose, and the image quality looks dreadful IMO

If that doesn't bother you, great? But this isn't what I wanted out of a remake and I'm fine just playing the original

If someone simply doesn't like the art style, that's fine. I have no issue with people having opinions. If your critique is a lack of anti-aliasing that meets your personal expectations, then fine. I think that's a silly argument because that would require dialing back textures or impacting performance. I would rather have those than smoother lines.

It's this argument that not enough has changed for the remaster. Not only is that a pre-mature opinion for someone having not even played the game, but I don't even understand what anyone would want to see without completely changing the game.

Ocarina of Time is literally held up as a top 10 game in the history of gaming. Why would you want to change anything about it?

Just for clarity, this is not a remaster, but a remake. Very different terms.

It's Nintendo's biggest release this year, i was expecting something more significant although when I saw Star Fox do the same thing I lowered my expectations.

This is how Nintendo operates, for better or worse, but as their major holiday title it feels lacking to me in ambition for what it could be

The visual updates just aren't as exciting to me as replaying something that retains the feel of the original but in a whole different and expanded way

I stated some of these earlier, but here's some examples of stuff that was talked about. Granted, a lot of these were pie in the sky and never gonna happen...

  • Adding the Light Temple (Was originally planned for OoT but later cut. This is why Rauru just hands you the Light Medallion.)
  • Revamping the combat system a bit, more in line with the more modern entries in the series.
  • Added new areas, mini-dungeons, mini-games, side quests, NPC's, etc. (Granted, none of these have been strictly ruled out yet, but they probably would have made mention of this already if they had done them.)
  • Keeping the general structure of the game, but expanding out the map to make everything bigger, a little more in line with later games like Twilight Princess.
  • Filling in Hyrule Field more, with new enemies, chests to find, some shrine type areas, etc. (More in line with exploration from BOTW.)
  • Adding a new Sheik quest line where you play as Sheik, filling in the 7 year gap. (This one was just a fan dream tbh.)
And to be fair, there could always be paid DLC down the line. That said I think they would much rather go straight to Majora's Mask remake if this thing sells like they think it will.
Lathspell

Other than the Light Temple idea, the rest of that just seems like extra fluff. What are you putting in all those chests or what are you offering for all these new rewards?

Heart pieces are all there. Items are found in temples. So that's just a lot of extra quests and chests to find some rupees, which I don't need more of. I love how games from these earlier generations were tighter and not 50% useless stuff.

I specifically HATED all the quests in TotK. I loved the fact that BotW had very few side quests. After doing a few TotK quests, I realized they were absolutely useless and detracted from simply exploring. I don't want hundreds of quests unless I have the opportunity to get actual great rewards like usable equipment, upgrades, or even cosmetics. Spending 30 minutes to do a quest that rewards me with 50 rupees is such a waste of my time.

If you start adding a bunch of additional equipment to Ocarina of Time, then you have to literally make changes to the base mechanics and puzzles in the game, which basically gives you an Ocarina of Time that really is no longer Ocarina of Time.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I mean side quests don't have to be your thing. There were a ton in TOTK that I never did either because that game is stuffed to the brim with stuff to do.

I'm just answering your question.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
But since you ask what you could put in chests, there's a million things they could've done.

Cosmetic items, new masks, etc.

I always thought that there was not nearly enough stuff to spend rupees on in the original so I would've found a way to address that too. Add more stuff to buy. Maybe your own house in Kakariko, and you have to have a banking system with an NPC like in MM.
Lathspell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I guess that's just not the type of game I want OOT to be. I'm not looking to spend 60 hours playing this game, so i don't need to buy a house and fill it up with stuff.

I would be down for the Light Temple being a thing because it would smoothly fit into the existing in-game mechanics.

I just think it's silly to find this remake to be lackluster because it's not an open world RPG or because they didn't double the amount of game time. It's OOT. I want it to be OOT.
