Have 1 Gig service from Optimum in BCS. It stinks. But, Starlink's max service is 400 mbps, and I doubt it gets more than 200 when pressed.

I asked my son to run a speed test on Optimum, but I'm betting the download speed isn't anywhere close to 1 Gig (probably under 100).

So, I guess the question is if anyone has real world experience with both? $130 per month for both, but which one will give the best download speeds?

Super slow connection. Sometimes it's better to just turn off wifi and use cellular data.

Starlink would be the best bet. Wife and I had optimum and we traded it in for Tachus.

The amount of issues people have with Optimum, not sure how they are still around.

Frontier fiber (verizon).
Holleman & Texas ? is this commercial? Know frontier had not built fiber into some of the apartment complexes there so if just near there that may be an issue. I use starlink daily and it works in general but if there were any fiber based service I would be using it instead.
Optimum is absolutely not for many reasons but you should have options in that area.

I'm not advocating for Optimum, but the issue might not be the with the speed in your area, but rather, their junky hardware.

For my optimum setup, I just have a basic modem that brings in the internet. It does not have any of their built in Wifi stuff because it's generally terrible.

So, I have a very basic modem and to that I plug in a Deco brand wirless mesh network with 3 pucks. If you don't know what that is, it's very simple and what a lot of people use in their homes. It will give you great wifi throughout the house and should extend to the outside areas as well.


Long story short, that could be your biggest issue. The modem/wifi box they give you is probably doing a terrible job of broadcasting the wireless signal. A little time and money spent on some upgraded hardware could be your best bet.

If you are able, do a speed test from a computer connected to the modem directly via ethernet. if that is slow, then time to call up the internet provider and make them tell you it is your equipment or theirs.

It's hard to diagnose network issues though if someone doesn't understand it fully.

Recently I changed over to AT&T fiber since the price was good. Unfortunately have to use their gateway but I still wanted to use my mesh router so it's a slightly harder installation. In the end, I couldn't get good speed. 200 down / 80 up on a gigabit connection. Gateway speed test was gig up/down so the line into the house is good but mesh router speed test was slow. Turns out I had activated a security scanning feature on the gateway that was free. Turned it off and got full speed. Crazy that a feature they provide would kill speeds by that much.

If speed tests come back fine but it's still slow in practical use, change your DNS to google or Cloudfare.

So, this Optimum outfit offers 1gig service but it's <100mbps IRL. That seems like massively false advertising they shouldn't be able to get away with.

I actually miss my ATT 1gig service that had in Dallas and on the coast. We have this weird ground based line of sight antenna service out here where we are. I'm getting 200 mpbs which is ok and don't have too many issues with speed but reliability is an issue.

Starlink is an option I'm considering when contract runs out but also wonder about the purported 400 mbps on their Max service and wonder how consistent that is. We have 100% unblocked skies and at 7,200 feet so shouldn't be an issue.

I'm on Starlink because I live outside city limits. When all of my kids are home we often have 2 or 3 TVs streaming while 3 people are gaming and very rarely have any issues. I personally think it is great.
