Anyone an expert on BTRFS/Linux Mint? I crashed one of mine and I've run down the google rabbit hole without any luck. Before I wiped it and started over, was curious if anyone here is an expert?

I lack the expertise to get into specifics of BTRFS recovery, but be sure you are mounting the drive as read-only and take a block-level image of it if you can (then work on that).

When you say crash, you talking a physical head crash or is this an SSD?

SSD and it won't mount as RO. Crash is overly simplified; more details here.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=468997

I SSH'ed into the live USB and tried to mount as RO, no luck.

Quote:

mint@mint:~$ sudo mount -t btrfs -o ro,usebackuproot /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt
mount: /mnt: can't read superblock on /dev/nvme0n1p2.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

and to repair

Quote:

mint@mint:~$ sudo btrfs rescue super-recover -v /dev/nvme0n1p2
All Devices:
Device: id = 1, name = /dev/nvme0n1p2

Before Recovering:
[All good supers]:
device name = /dev/nvme0n1p2
superblock bytenr = 65536

device name = /dev/nvme0n1p2
superblock bytenr = 67108864

[All bad supers]:

All supers are valid, no need to recover

There's no real data on it so not a huge loss to wipe, but it seems like its almost working but I don't have the expertise to fix it nor can I find it via the web.

Thanks

Post dmesg output after attempting to mount.

Check your BIOS settings for AHCI/SATA/RAID, it may have changed after you removed battery.
Don't run a descructive repair just yet. It's likely just a bad logfile, and if it isn't you can probably extract the files still. Since your timeshift backups are on the BTRFS even if the latest is corrupted there's a good chance the backups aren't.

Sorry, by the time I saw this I nuked it and started over. I went down the rabbit hole of recovering data and UFS File Explorer and ReclaiMe seem like very cool software for file recovery.

And the bios was correct as far as I could tell. I did have to manually create the mount point.

Here is the dmesg.log

I posted it on the linux mint forum and a btrfs forum, the btrfs place said it was most likely gone.

Not originally disk issue. Something failed and the dell bios reset wiped your boot entry. btrfs supersectors are fine. Looks like the system hibernated and something then broke, so it never booted properly again. you've got swap stuck at suspend (hibernate). Might be a bad rtc, bios update, kernel update, or the intel nvidida gfx switching caused that.

The proper boot recovery would need to set swap off unless you want to boot into old memory state, which is what exactly the boot repair did not do...
it mounted swap as rw and caused the metadata and actual data to become mismatched...

I ended up just wiping it and starting over, but sounds like you know way more about it than me.

And from what I remember about the issue and steps, sounds spot on to what I remember. I was able to repair it and it started to boot and I stupidly told it to resume from hibernate and that was the last of that of anything useful.
