We were in the Dallas/Ft Worth area for a few things this weekend with the family and had the time to check out a video game museum in the area.

Overall it was pretty neat. Nothing to make a special trip for but I'd say worth it if you're in the area and have time to kill.

Lots of things to look at (and play on) in a relatively small space…also had a few nice nostalgia moments for myself and seeing my kids interact certain ways brought back some good old memories.

And if you're asking yourself, "Yeah, but did they have XXXX console???" Yes, they sure did.

This get nostalgic for anyone?

How many controllers can you identify?

The game that nearly destroyed the whole gaming industry

Learning about the OG Oregon Trail

Virtual Reality has came a long way since this crap…

Who else had a living room like this?

Or a bedroom like this? We had our two oldest do 5 rounds of duck hunt…whoever won got the good bed in the hotel room…

Just some of their setups to play on

We went there one time during my son's soccer tournament when we had a long break and it was awesome! Really fun if you like video games and for those of us who were kids in the 70's, man I saw a lot of stuff I'd forgotten about. Glad you got to go!

It's a really well done museum but they've really struggled to keep it interesting -- it's the exact same exhibits they've had for a decade for a subject matter that could have some really cool revolving exhibits.

I had a friend telling me about this museum just last week. Summer of 82 was my one and only big video gaming summer. Played games on my original issue XBox with my son for a period of time, but that's about it. Nevertheless, I am interested in seeing stuff that I have long forgotten about. Not sure when I'll get to go, as our next trip to Dallas will be for the birth of our second grandchild (from the son that I used to play games with).

And just for anyone planning, it's in Frisco -- not Dallas proper.

Love that place and live less than 10 from it. I keep saying I'm going to get an annual pass just to go fart around in the arcade.

They do have rotating exhibits, sometimes big, sometimes small. They typically rotate games they emphasize on a monthly basis too.

The railroad museum is also in the same complex. I haven't been yet but plan to go at some point. It has a massive model train exhibit that was donated by the family of a local guy. It is a separate ticket but I'd love to check it out at some point. https://www.historictrains.org/traintopia

That looks pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

Relatedly, for anyone looking for a retro arcade, I highly recommend Freeplay arcade. There are a few locations in the greater Dallas area.

Freeplay arcades are awesome but I recently have been to a couple of Cidercades in Fort Worth and Austin and they are the same thing but WAY larger with a LOT more games. I prefer them for that reason but you can't go wrong with either retro arcade!

By the way, if you are taking the kids the the video game museum, be sure to go to the Frisco library next door to see the T-Rex skeleton.

Oh yeah, I actually went there last month and it was way better than I expected. Walking in, seeing all the classic consoles and arcade cabinets lined up brought back so many memories. It's a must visit for gamers

We went there several years ago and it is awesome! Highly recommend taking your family if they like video games at all.

The retro arcade at the end was really fun. We plan on going back again someday soon.
