Researching a new laptop for my FIL.

He's 75 and not a gamer, but he is comfortable in the Windows environment and can do pretty much whatever productivity-wise. His current laptop is struggling in performance and it's time to get a new one.

I'd like to get him something decently powerful...as I think he probably would like 10 years of use out of it. I'd also like to keep the price sub 1200 or so.

Anyway, what are the thoughts these days on brands or any good models? Seems going expensive tends to involve a gaming video card and/or touchscreens which he does not need.

I'd like 32GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD, a decent CPU (don't care on AMD/Intel), and something around a 16 inch screen. There was an MSI that looked intriguing with these stats at Best Buy, but it has a 60hz screen. Does this really matter for non-gamers? I don't think he even plans to use the device for video streaming. But I don't want to stress his eyes out or anything.

I don't think you need to spend NEAR $1200. Even these are way overkill imo:

$999 - Dell Inspiron 16 Plus

$899 - MSI Modern 15 (EDIT: After looking at Best Buy, this may be the same MSI you were referring to..)

Just keep an eye on Slickdeals and wait for something to pop up that fits the bill. I would imagine you could eventually find something in the $700-800 range pretty easily.

If you're not super pressed to buy something immediately, July-August right before school starts is a great time to get laptop deals.

Bigger screen because of his age, no celerons, 16 gig or more of memory. Newegg.com

You are after a 500-700 dollar laptop.
