Hardwired with receiver or Sonos

Just got a nice projector and big screen. Now I need the sound to match. My mind is telling me a receiver and wired speakers are going to give me the best sound. Is the difference discernable enough to not just purchase a Sonos set and call it a day?

You'll get better sound for the money for a receiver over the Sonos. Sonos has remotely disabled a full line of older products from working with their app and that was the only way to use them if I remember correctly.

Well, that makes the choice real easy. Thanks.

they didn't disable anything, but they require you to run the older equipment with a separate app. It was a minor annoyance but my equipment was going on 10 years old so I wasn't that upset. They also gave 40% off discounts for new equipment, so that was handy.

I'm all Sonos now but wired is always going to be better.

Is this a dedicated media room? If so I would go wired speaker set up. Only reason I went Sonos is because we moved and my room config is not conducive for traditional wired so Sonos made more sense.

I like my Sonos but I miss my full blown Klipsch 5.1 setup.

It is a dedicated media room. Actually, when we remodeled the house, I had AV guys run audio cables through the ceiling and walls, and they run to a media closet where the receiver would go. Everything is all there, and ready to go. I would just have to drill a small hole into the Sheetrock to mount the speaker and connect the wire.

Edit: I use passive Klipsch speakers for my record player, and really like them. They were/are going to be my choice going the hardwired option.

I finally replaced my first real set of theater speakers last year. They lasted me over 25 years. Speakers are some of the best investments you can make in audio/video...unless you get something that has a bunch of fancy electronics in them. Keep the electronics in them down to simple crossovers and you'll be better off in the long run.

I would almost be mad at you if you don't just go with hardwired then. You have the setup. Get some towers in there and at least do a kickass 2.1. You can go big on that and not really need 5.1 if you do it right.

Why towers? If it's a normal sized, enclosed room and he's going to get a sub - towers offer nothing over bookshelf speakers.

While you are mostly right, saying they offer "nothing" is a bit misleading. The towers may offer better efficiency (thus higher SPL), offer a lower crossover point with your subs for better bass, have better freq response in your room, etc, etc. The answer is always "it depends"...

And here I was, just thinking about aesthetics. I like the look of towers, but I'll most likely go with a 5.1 setup. Unless I get some absolutely devastating JL Audio towers. I'm not spending that much though.

Probably just going to go with this. Use the bookshelf speakers for the rear, towers for front left/right, and soundbar for the center.

I think you could find a better deal than that for a 5.1 system.

Sonos is ***** Along the same lines as bose.

Speakers can last a lifetime.

Then you get an amp that can last a long time.

Then get your processor which is the piece that might need up grading.

Don't tie it all together and don't tie too much to a company that you have to depend on to keep software need to run your hardware updated.

I open to recommendations. I know there are cheaper ones, and more expensive ones. I thought it looked like a middle of the road system. Also didn't do much research TBH.

I'm just personally not a fan of Klipsch. At 3k your budget is pretty decent.

Speaker brands I'd look at are ELAC, Paradigm, Def Tech, maybe a cheap.B&W system.

This is almost the exact same system I have except mine is 15 years old. It's a great system.

All personal preference though. Detractors don't like the horns of Klipsch.

I sell speakers and can drop ship anywhere in Texas, I can probably get you a hell of a deal...
