I've given up on my computer build

Last one I built was in 1996.

I thought I could do it. Got all the parts.
No joy.
I've spent hours trying to troubleshoot.
PSU is working (paper clip test).

Anyone can recommend someone that can make all these parts work here in CS?

Post your parts. And what do you mean it's not working? You mean it's not posting?

Sometimes these things are so simple. Make sure the HDMI cord is plugged into the monitor and to the GPU or motherboard and the monitor has power.

no, I mean it won't power up. not even up to plugging in monitor yet.
psu works with paperclip test (fan turns when powered on), but when I plug everything in, psu fan won't turn
I've taken it back down to just RAM, cpu, HD, and still no luck.
verified power sw, LED plugs are correctly placed
took out both rams and just put one in the proper slot, no work
verified correct orientation of cpu

case: Dark Base pro 901

One thing to check is the validity of the parts working together. You can use pcpartpicker.com to check all the components.

Not sure what issue you are having but that is a good start. Then working through each of the steps of filling in your MB.

picked all the parts from that website.

The PSU paperclip test just makes sure your PSU works. Remove your HDD, put the other stick of RAM in.

Make sure you have only the CPU, CPU cooler, GPU (if your CPU does not have onboard graphics)and RAM. Also make sure you have power from the PSU to both GPU and MB, and the cooler is plugged into the MB.

Turn the PSU on and make sure it's plugged in. Find the 2 pins for power from your MB manual and short them with a flathead screwdriver. The fans on the cooler should turn on and some LEDs should cycle or you could hear some beeps. It's better to have a monitor plugged in as well so you can visually confirm your PC is working with a BIOS post.

Watch the video below starting at 9:07.

If it won't boot, move your ram to the other slot and try again. Both RAM slots and sticks failing is probably not the issue, so that leaves a MB or CPU issue.

I'll look over that. thanks.

I was verifying that the psu was working with that test.
I've gone down to just one ram stick in a2 (MB primary) and tried both. no luck.
I've got 3 one sided ssd HD's. Admittedly, I guess, one could be bad. I already did remove the primary one, and moved one of the others over, but no change.

What PSU do you have? Some Corsair PSU fans won't spit at all unless they are under pretty heavy load.

screwdriver trick didn't work. may be my MB... ugh.
also, opened up new monitor and it was cracked.
just an entirely bad experience overall.

Try putting your PC in a barebones state. No graphics card or extra hard drives etc.

Before connecting the power supply to the mother board, verify the power supply has power outputting and that the voltages are correct do you have a multi meter?

If not just look for a light.

Try plugging one thing in at a time and see what happens. For example just the motherboard; however do not even have the hard drives plugged in for the first test.

The point here is to isolate the issue. If you get a problem wiggle the cables and/or swap them out if it's a modular supply.

Sometime troubleshooting is finding the issue by eliminating what's not the problem.

Good luck.

Bummer. I'm sorry to hear that. Barring anything else, I think your best bet is to reach out to customer support from wherever you purchased your parts and setup a return/replacement.

What error codes is your mother board flashing? After a move where my computer was in a stowage locker for 4 months I had a ram go bad. I was running 128 GB so dropping to 64 is only a mild sacrifice. The flashing light on the MB finally clued me in to what the problem was.

If amd cpu, it might need a mobo bios flash to even post. The 5000+ series cpus on older AM4 boards had this issue.

May be a dumb question, but is ECO mode off on the PSU?

Quote:

At the rear of both Leadex VII units, we have an "ECO" switch that users can choose enable or disable. Switching eco mode on will enable this PSU's zero RPM fan mode at at low power draw levels.

So you can get the PSU running by itself. But you cannot get the MB running with it. With nothing else attached. Well CPU of course. It won't even attempt? What CPU are you running? And do you have a multimeter?

I'm not talking about the 'mood' lights but the diagnostic led. What is your motherboard?

I'm not either. The MB has 4 small LED lights that aid with troubleshooting.

Another dumb ask that I did when I got back into building. Do you have all of the board power cables including the CPU power cable plugged in from the PSU? I didn't realize there was a 24 pin main and two 8-pin cables. I just did the 24 and thought that was all.

So if PSU and MOBO combo isn't working then you've eliminated every other variable possible it sounds like. Which likely leaves DOA mobo. Which is not too terribly uncommon unfortunately. I'd just start an RMA at this point if I were you, honestly.

Yeah unfortunately Asus has been taking hits for reliability of the last few years. They used to be my favorite brand.

If it is the mobo, look into a gigabyte or MSI. ASROCK has very surprisingly risen up in quality too.

Building a computer today is much easier than it was in 1996, you're not the problem. Modern parts I feel have a lot of issue, not sure how that compares to the olden days. If you really feel at a loss and live in near Houston, Microcenter is genuinely great for hardware help.

I got the new mb. I'll try it and if still having issues, I'll reach out. What is best way to get ahold of you?

I'm pretty late to the party here, but I once had a similar issue. Turns out one of the screws holding the motherboard to the case was actually causing a short. I would take the motherboard out of the car, hook it up, and it all worked. As soon as I put it into the case, it wouldn't power on. I went piece by piece testing the power after I plugged each connector in, put every screw in, etc. Eventually I figured out it was a single screw causing the issue. I just ended up leaving that one post unscrew and the PC was good for years.

Anyways, long story short, I would do things one by one until you can figure out which component it is. Including, just putting it together without the case.
