Oldest child is enrolling in the fall and my wife said some parents in the Facebook group are suggesting he take this course prior to starting classes.

Any engineering students/grads that have input on whether this is necessary or valuable? TIA

What kind of engineering (or tbd)? And what kind of boot camp? Companies that offer coding boot camps can be expensive and not worth it. Depending how good your kid is at self learning, a course on udemy can be just as good and cheap.

Since it's only $20 right now, might as well go ahead and grab it. I've taken some Udemy classes through work and it can be hit and miss, but some have been really good. I've never done this course, but python is a great language to know due to it's versatility, so can't hurt to have some extra skills.

I did this one. It's an actual university class, but you don't have to sign up or take the tests unless you want to. I just went through the coursework. Self paced and incredibly easy to follow/understand.

I also took the version of this course that includes more than just python (cs50x), but this is the Python only one.

It's free unless you want the certificate. Very easy to follow and understand, but still challenging.

Work through www.adventofcode.com using all the free resources you can find on google.

It's entertaining to help keep interest going.

Make sure when taking the course that they get regex down cold. It's applicable to a lot of different languages, and many applications also use it for searches and filters. Knowing it can significantly reduce code size, as well as allow you to simplify a lot of routine tasks in day-to-day applications.

I refuse to believe anyone can actually get regex down cold. I will forever have a cheat sheet.

Yes, my son was a fish general engineering major a few semesters ago, had no programming experience, and was completely lost in engineering and math lab as Python is used extensively.

I have told all of our friends since then to make sure their Aggie Engineering HS Seniors take a summer coding class online or do something to learn Python BEFORE you get to school.
