I didn't think I was hurling to redundancy this fast but Its happening.

Kid has an occulus 2 and loves it, but the game selection on the store is pretty terrible. After doing some looking online I found Steam, which I've heard of, but know nothing about. I keep seeing a cool game called Half Life Alyx and want to get it, but am apparently too old and stupid

Can someone explain to me the concept of Steam and then mayble give me an idea of how hard it is to install games onto the Headset.

Yes, yes. Google is your friend. I did that and didn't really figure much out.

Steam and their sales are worse than a heroin or gambling addiction for your finances. If you've avoided it this long, do yourself a favor and don't go down that path. Someday you'll be looking into an abyss of several hundred unplayed games and potentially thousands of wasted dollars.

In all seriousness, it's a centralized game marketplace that you can purchase, manage, and launch games from. It's the place to be, but the oculus store has a lot of good VR content as well.

Steam is the Google App store or Apple's store for PC Gaming.

It doesn't have everything, but it's close. Download and create an account. They have separate sections for VR games.

As was mentioned the Steam Sales (there are a bunch) are an excellent time to pick up games at a steep (sometimes) discount. It is very dangerous.

Don't think you can get it downloaded to the Oculus, but you can stream it from a PC.

Correct, you need a gaming PC that supports VR. You install Steam on it like iTunes and buy the games. Then you download Meta on the PC so you can stream games from your PC to the Oculus locally on your wi-fi.

Steam predates the Apple store by what, ten years? It laughs at your attempts to equate it to such childlike beginners.

Steam is just a digital storefront where you can buy video games and they are forever available in your Steam library. You can play some VR games through Steam. Don't recall the specifics of connecting your VR to Steam as it has been a while since I have done it, but don't recall it being difficult.

If you play games on PC, Steam is the defacto storefont that dominates the marketshare. There have been a few other digital storefronts who have tried to compete with Steam with minimal success - Epic Games Store, GoG, etc.

It is amazing how much talent early Microsoft had. And I guess current Microsoft has. Anyway... Steam is a store. The best store ever made; created and ran by a brilliant man.

According to Wikipedia, they both started in 03, iTunes Store a couple months before steam.

During sales, I tell myself "don't buy it unless you intend to play it in the next month." That has kept me out of trouble since like 2017.

Well, I had the intent to play it, but then...

I remember when Steam was thought of in the same fashion as EA is now, and was just some piece of trash you had to download in order to play Half-Life.

I hated it at first, because it required an internet connection to play and back then internet was not very stable. During an internet outage was the time I'd want to play the most but their DRM wouldn't let you. It seemed grossly unnecessary at the time versus the tried and true method of just downloading a game to your PC.

Yes, I bought the orange box to play Team Fortress 2 and it made me install Steam to play it. Between this and Battle.net, I can pinpoint where it all started.

I'm 55 and have had steam since the beginning... it seems the 40 year crowd are the console kiddies that don't know the full power of the pcmasterrace.

I hated that the nerdery has become the home of so may xbox/Playstation threads.
