I love Indiana Jones so definitely going to be picking it up. Being made by MachineGames who made the Wolfenstein games.

Troy Baker absolutely nails the voice and they definitely got the feel right, at least from the clips shown. What bothers me though is the first person gameplay - the whip mechanics in particular looked pretty janky in the trailer. Baffles me that you have decades worth of Tomb Raider and Uncharted laying out the blueprint for an Indiana Jones game and they seem to have chosen to completely ignore it.

I'll almost certainly play it for the story, but definitely some red flags for me gameplay-wise

And what's is the problem with first person games....from an old gamer I don't get it.

They're paying all this money for an Indiana Jones license and you end up playing from the perspective where the Indiana Jones you primarily see is his hands. When you're trying to build a strong central character you design it for third person. When you're trying to allow the player to create their own character you go first person. Indiana Jones is a strong central character, it should be third person.

First-person is a PC-centric design decision. There's a reason why Playstation first-party games are almost universally third-person (I can't think of any that aren't). There's a reason Nintendo games are almost universally third-person (I can't think of any recent ones that aren't), and there's a reason why Microsoft almost universally make first-person games (Gears being the exception?).

This should 100% be third person. Baffling decision IMO.

It's a Bethesda Softworks game, so owned by Microsoft.

Agreed, using the whip that much in first person combat just looks weird.

Hmmm. I was hoping this might be exploration and puzzle based like the newer Tomb Raider games but it definitely looks more like a shooter. When do we get a gameplay video you think?

This is annoying moving forward. They make some fun games and I am sure they will be behind the new Fallout whenever it comes out and in order to play I will have to buy a new platform for one game.

Bethesda Softworks is the publisher over Bethesda Game Studios, but is not necessarily the same team. Todd Howard looks to be involved in this one, but it's not the same studio that did Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield.

That's an incredibly shallow case for why an Indiana Jones game should be first person.

It's different than other games of a similar kind and the developer is used to making first person games is a weak justification. That's an argument for why Microsoft shouldn't have acquired the rights to an Indiana Jones game, not why they should make one the way they're making it.

Just because a studio is good at a certain thing doesn't mean it doesn't have the capability to expand beyond that. Respawn was a FPS developer and knocked it out of the park with the third person Jedi Survivor.

Much beyond that is "they *could* do a good job with it*. But I mean, Indy isn't really the kind of franchise that centers around gunfighting, which is much more geared toward first person. The whip and fistfighting are both more important pieces of his toolkit with guns coming in sparingly. Neither lends itself well to a first person perspective (the former in particular evident in the trailer). Add on that the difficulties presented in first person platforming and exploration and you have some potentially messy gameplay.

Could it be good? Of course. But it's definitely an uphill battle.

Skyrim says hello.

To each their own. I don't own a console and never will, as my PC smokes anything that Sony or MS will build. I'd much rather play these types of games with maximum immersion, which to me necessitates first person.

Obviously some disagree. It's ok.

I'm happy they went first person. Machinegames are masters at producing FPS games with great narratives. See Wolfenstein series.

I'd love it if Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft would cut the exclusive **** out. I had to do the same thing to play Ghost of Tsushima and Uncharted

PlayStation and Nintendo are going to remain exclusive on consoles, Xbox will absolutely be multi platform long term and I'd bet they're going to get out of the dedicated console business and are just going to rely on streaming hardware, PlayStation and Nintendo consoles and then building a Xbox front end for HTPC's to compete with Steam.

What does anything I said have to do with Skyrim (which is a completely different style of game) or about consoles/PC? The latter has absolutely nothing to do with anything. The former is a completely different style of game. None of it has anything to do with the criticisms I had about an action/puzzler/platformer being done in first person.

I think it will depend on how much Bethesda/Activision exclusives can drive hardware sales. I'd expect them to give it at least a few more years, and probably one more console generation to see the acquisitions have an effect before getting out of the business.

What seems to be the biggest differentiator (from what I've seen, at least) is Xbox's inability to sell units in Japan. I wonder if Microsoft will potentially look into acquiring a Japanese developer in the next few years to help with that front.

This is why it's good to have a PC + console. You can eventually get Sony games on PC.

Japan isn't the biggest home console market anymore anyway. It's way beyond that at this point. They aren't the primary console in the US for 2 generations now and Xbox issues in Europe, specifically the UK, now compared to the 360 era is stark.

I'm not certain that Sony will have as big of a market lead over MS next go around though. They have bungled a few things last couple of years.

Hopefully they learned their lesson after the last movie bombed and it will not be a woke fest. But I doubt it. At least with a game you can skip cut scenes

This, I personally can't stand third person games. I don't get the appeal at all. It's like playing racing games from a chase cam.

For games like assassins creed it would be so hard to make work in first person. Generally exploration/platforming is better in third person.

I really like 3rd person for exploration and puzzle games. If this is just a shooter, then 1st makes more sense. They did mention that the camera pulls away to 3rd for traversals and climbing mechanics and stuff. I'd like to see more gameplay to see how that dynamic works.

It's available on Game Pass. I'm about an hour in and really enjoying it so far.

I do have a few comments:

1. The first-person works, and it slides into third person for the climbing seamlessly.
2. The use of the whip is oddly satisfying.
3. The stealth parts are fun -- but there doesn't seem to be alert cool down system like in Metal Gear Solid.
4. The map situation so far has been a little frustrating.
5. It seems like a good mix of story and exploring.
6. The opening sequence is pretty fun for Indy fans.

I like getting into the Indy world, and though I'm enjoying it, it makes me wish I was playing a new Uncharted game.

I have it downloaded but haven't started playing just yet.

One hint that I heard was to do the story missions for each area 1st. That will be the natural path for finding uniforms to help you blend end and use stealth. If you go to side missions first you usually have to fight your way through.

Just got through the Vatican. It's a really good game! For me, game of the year!

I love that these type of games have a story difficulty so I can just enjoy it rather than getting stuck and giving up.

It's the Jedi Survivor of the Indiana Jones Franchise.

I'm currently meh on the game right now. Love the environment and the Indy-ness of it all but the gameplay is not doing it for me. Game seems very easy on regular difficulty and the "puzzles" are an insult to my intelligence. You can't call the puzzle desk in the vatican a puzzle desk.

I blame it on soulslike games that I'm very fond of now. It's ruining games I probably would have enjoyed prior.

If the gameplay doesn't pick up, I might just have to blast through the main mission to at least see the story.
