Have ATT Fiber and it has been fine. The router sucks, so I had purchased an extender and it has been working fine for a couple years.

Got an email today that I interpret to mean they are basically bricking the extender by not allowing it to update after they push out new software to the router in Feb. Not inclined to invest in any more of their crappy hardware.

I have the BGW320 Wi-Fi gateway router. I briefly looked into finding out the steps to allow me to have my own better router, but got distracted or hit a speedbump and didn't follow through since the current setup was working okay.

Looks like I may need to follow through now. Anyone have walk through or link to a good easy to follow walk through to complete the step needed in the ATT router? I am passably technical enough to follow instructions in the router settings but know no details on what things actually are.

TIA!!

You want IP Passthrough mode that sends the external IP address through to your new router, this reddit post has the list of things to change in the ATT router web gui: https://www.reddit.com/r/firewalla/comments/15koib1/att_fiber_bgw320500_ip_passthrough_configuration/

Configuration of ATT Fiber BGW320-500
Wireless Radios: Off
Packet filter: Off
NAT Default Server: Off
Firewall Advanced: Off
Public Subnet Hosts: Disabled
IP passthrough: ON
  • Allocation Mode: Passthrough
  • default server internal address: none
  • Passthrough Mode: DHCPS-fixed
  • Passsthrough Fixed MAC address: MAC address of Router

Things to double check if you don't get the external IP on your new Router

[ol]
  • Verify that the MAC address configured in the "Passthrough Fixed MAC Address" box is, in fact, the correct MAC for the firewalla. The easiest thing to do is just hit "choose from list" under "Firewall > IP Passthrough" on the BGW320 configuration and you should see "firewalla" as an option. You can also look at the MAC in firewalla under box > settings > about. The MAC should be entered with colons.
  • On you BGW320, go to the main page ("device > status") and look at the very bottom under "Home Network Devices". Do you see any device other than firewalla there? Are any of those devices assigned the public IP?
  • [/ol]
And if you want a video walk through:

And another reminder to make sure you disable WIFI in the ATT router as part of this, as you want everything behind your router including wifi since you're disabling the firewall in the ATT router and using the new router for security.

One of the good things about ATT basically only deploying one gateway at any given time is that you can find really good instructions.
