I think most will be done with Reddit. I understand reaching for big bucks, but this was never a company that could realistically do an IPO, as there is really no viable business model. I've seen them comparing themselves to twitter, but it's not even a close comparison of a product. Twitter is primarily a social distribution platform where people primarily read and comment on notable topics that are delivered by a focused group of "influencers" and media personalities. Reddit is a community based product where the user interaction that drives discussion is the platform, and without the user based discussion, there is no platform at all. Which is pretty much going to be the end result.

I have some doubts about that. While there will no doubt be some drain from people who formerly used third party apps to visit the site, do we have any idea of what percentage of the user base accesses Reddit through third-party apps? If it's a significant portion of the user base, maybe.

I think it's a pretty small portion. Although there's certainly a larger portion aware of this whole situation now. Will be interesting to see if they support a boycott. My guess is it will be business as usual with slightly less traffic.

It's not necessarily the number of people who do but the heaviest users that do.

I seriously doubt that. From the numbers I have seen less than 10% of the user base uses a third party app.

Lots of mods use the apps and that is where the pain will be most felt, either from losing mods or mods being less effective.

True, that was probably a bit too much of a definitive statement on my part.

But I imagine this is just the beginning of changes Reddit will do as they approach an IPO. They are going to have to prove their economic viability, and just the way this platform is built, I can't see a way for them to increase earnings without pissing off the majority of the core users. The 3rd party app api decision was a strong double dip for them as it removed an expense that did not generate revenue and at the same time, "in theory", shifted that traffic to an avenue that will be exposed to Ads. Thinking more on it, I do think even with the issues of killing off 3rd party apps and rampant mod abuse over the last few years, reddit will probably survive somewhat intact just because there isn't an alternative platform that can provide a compatible amount of the same features. And if there is one thing I know we all know about the internet, is that even if people hate something, they'll still use it if there isn't an alternative with the same shiny features.

Same here unless Reddit really upgrades their app.

I am sorry, you cannot convince me these 3rd party apps are so much leagues and better than the web version that you outright quit. I don't believe you.

The web version with the occasional mobile version has been more that sufficient.

Happy to see reddit go out of business and burn to the ground. Bunch of leftist dirtbags. Hopefully they sell and Elon brings it back to something better.

Since the official two day protest is over I have definitely noticed a lot more tension in most of my subs. Enough that the communities are damaged now.

And this whole thing did more damage to the Reddit user base than the actual company I am convinced. And it was self inflicted. I'm all for public discourse and demonstration but this was never going to be a united front and two days was a joke. Reddit leadership just took a long weekend basically. A few subs are still going dark indefinitely but most are back. Some voted on it and not a one I saw voted to keep going and that is where I see the tension in the groups. A LOT of finger pointing and naysaying and even shaming. Pretty sad to see all around. And rumors of Reddit just creating new mods and opening up the holdout subs anyways. Which is exactly what I would do if I were them.

My verdict of this blackout? Ineffectual and even destructive to the very people who organized it.

It was slacktivism at it's finest. I'm annoyed that Apollo is going away, but it was cracking me up how so many people took this as some sort of moral line in the sand they were going to draw.

Like you said, just a long weekend for reddit. There's zero chance they are going to allow their biggest subreddits to go dark forever.

Probably about half my subs took part in the blackout. Everything is back now and seems to be going on as normal. I only use Reddit for gaming and sports news for the most part.

Meh, I use the native app. It's loads better than the old days of text chains. Apparently Apollo was making a profit of their app, and Reddit wasn't. Don't get me started on the morality of community driven and moderated social sites making big profits. But I completely understand if Reddit doesn't want to provide free access to their content so a third party can profit.

There's a big difference between charging a reasonable fee for API use (which Apollo's dev would have gladly done) and intentionally making the pricing so outlandish that no 3rd party app can survive. They're going to drive away users with this move. I know I personally will pretty much quit reddit due to how terrible the native app is.

One of the third party apps already said they can survive by charging users $2 per month.

The apollo dev also didn't come out of this smelling like a rose.

Well the real question is whether you believe reddit when they say that their API pricing was mainly set to prevent language learning models from using reddit to train up for free. I tend to think that is more of their aim rather than trying to kill off these 3rd party apps that represent a small overall percentage of their userbase.

I agree with powerbelly, I don't think Apollo's developer looks completely clean and innocent in all this. Recording all of your calls is smart, but also makes me think he went into this looking for a fight.

Either way, it's pretty clear this will be a small blip on the radar and reddit will keep chugging on. Even if they do truly lose a chunk of subscribers (and I doubt the number of people that truly drop reddit and never engage with it again ends up relatively small).

Reddit has already said that modding tools will be exempt from the API charge. Not that that matters. Some mods are power tripping again already and deciding to speak for thousands of Reddit's by locking down the subs indefinitely. There is already revolt growing against the mods. What hubris.

Doesn't Reddit have super user powers over their own subs? Seems like an incredible oversight if not.
powerbelly
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They do, but they can't afford to have a bunch of mods quit and have un-modded subs.

I doubt they'd quit. It's Reddit. Once you enter, you never leave. And once you sup at the modding table, you will never want to give up your seat. The taste of power, the thrill of looking down on your lessers….

Someone mentioned an analogy and I could not agree more. This is like the freeway protesters that would block traffic. It never came close to working and all it did was piss people off AT the protestors. (Protestors = mods here)

Reddit is kicking mods who aren't modding. IOW indefinite lock down and "inviting new mods to take over".

This whole thing has been interesting to me. I am not super excited to see Reddit come out of this with zero effect but at the same time your average mod is about four steps below terrorist in the heinous rankings so I weep with glee to see the rise up against some of these turds. Reddit won. Time to go back to normal and if that means scraping some mod abuse from the site, I am actually glad for that.

What a weird turn of events.

I was with the mods on this one (even though they are a bunch of dorks). Reddits app and website are so crappy I can't go back to it. When the app die I'll probably be back on Texags a lot more when I need to waste time.

True, but the CEO is the one who has been caught point blank lying, specifically about developers like apollo and trying to shift the blame off of reddit through those lies.

His receipts make him look bad. Providing receipts where you ask for a bribe to go away aren't good receipts

Enough for defamation? He was saying that Apollo CEO was asking for bribes in order to go away. To the tune of millions of dollars. An outright lie it appears like. Is there a legal footing to fight that assertion? I would be beyond livid if that was me. Outright physical violence level. I enjoyed watching mods getting their pp's smacked a bit but everything I have seen so far is that Reddit dude is beyond scummy and deserving of an asskicking.

About what I figured. Defamation has always been a fuzzy definition to me. Still sucks that lies of such magnitude that can be damaging to character and career can just be flung out there in the corporate setting with no real repercussion. Might just be me, but this is one of my triggers for sure. I might be a piece of **** but I ain't no snitch and I don't sell my integrity. Anything saying otherwise and it's hands on time worthy IMO. I feel for Apollo guy.

Agreed.

TBF, I think Reddit's mobile app is pretty limited. But the histrionics behind a company not wanting parasites sucking off of them when they don't receive anything in return was equally ridiculous. Claims like Reddit hates the handicapped, etc were being thrown around.

If Reddit is smart, they kill the protests by removing the holdout mods, they invest in app updates based on user feedback, and make everyone happy. If Reddit is predictable, they kill the protests by removing the holdout mods, then refuse to address anything and have to deal with similar issues in 5 years.
