I'm about to switch from ATT to Verizon this weekend and it'd be much easier to upgrade my iPhone 11 to a 13plus at that time rather than wait until the new iPhone 14 comes out but just curious on what I might be missing out on. Are there any rumors about what the new iPhone 14 might offer as far as features?

From what I have read the 14 is more like a 13S. The 14 Pro will be more like a new unit.

"Pill box" hole and big camera bumps, and the pros get a better processor.

Unfortunately, all rumors say the iPhone 14 will still be stuck with a Lightning port instead of USB-C. iPhone 15 should finally catch Apple up to the rest of the world in adopting USB-C. I'm ready for the one cable future.

Are rumors still saying there will be 4 models? A regular sized iPhone and Pro as well as Max versions of both?

The "Far Out" could be hinting at satellite connection in light of Space X Starlink and T-Mobile teaming up to bring text messaging in remote places.

If I was about to switch carriers, I'd wait to see what this is all about first.

Since everyone seems to acknowledge this, I'm wondering what sales will look like for this model. How many people are just going to wait it out, so they don't have to keep investing in lightning cables?

Is this really that big an issue for most iPhone users? I mean I'd prefer they make the switch now, but I also already have every lightning cable I need, which now that I think about it is really just 1. My truck has wireless charging and wireless carplay and I have a wireless charger on my nightstand. I keep a lightning cable in my work/travel bag.

But my battery is on it's last leg on my 3 (I think) year old phone. So I'll be upgrading regardless of port type.

I do think it's an issue as much with do you have a lightning cable, instead it's more around "why should anyone have to carry a lightening cable"? I would love to switch over to an iPhone but the USB-C rumors have me waiting until it comes out because it makes no sense to buy an iPhone that still has a lightening port. When I travel right now I only need 1 charger and cable to cover my MacBook Pro, my iPad Pro, and my Android phone....which is asinine to think that statement isn't true if I have an iPhone right now.

I don't think it will have any effect at all. Anyone who has had an iphone for a few years has a dozen lightning cables around.

It just seems like there might be some amount of lame-duck factor in play. Besides the hardcore enthusiast type, most people upgrade every 3ish years. So it's not so much an issue right now, but if your cable needs replacement (and you've gone through your entire supply) after the switch is done... it'd feel bad buying something which you know is already outdated.

Really just a curiosity thing... I'm sure Apple has all sorts of internal estimates and data.

This decision feels lagged by Apple. The iPads are all USB-c and there is no reason why they couldnt do the phones as well. The only issue is timing. This phone specs and hardware were almost certainly locked for manufacturing a year ago. Maybe a bit earlier. But they all but admit hardware locks in a year before initial shipping. The only thing I can think of is they projected a shortage or issue getting the USB-c female ports in large enough quantity. That would have been during COVID when all sorts of things were short.

Cable, schmable. Apple needs get out of the 1990s and start using RCS messaging.

Just looked up what RCS is. Sounds like it is basically androids version of iMessage.

Yeah, that's about it. Doesn't have all the features, but would drastically improve the cross-platform texting experience.

Which is why Apple is so determined to ignore it. iMessage is an incredible vendor lock and seriously impacts perception and investment in the ecosystem (that's paraphrasing an actual quote from an Apple exec)

I didn't mean to derail the thread, but RCS does have all the features, and its more secure, and Apple could keep their current "special" features and upgrade the base platform from SMS to RCS. Its purely a business/perception decision as stated above, and its holding everyone back (including iPhone users).

I bought a 13 Pro this year instead of returning to Android because the features of Messages are fun but if Apple continues to drag it's feet on RCS this will be my last iPhone. It's become abundantly clear that Apple no longer considers itself an innovative company. I'm starting to think Apple in general and iPhone in particular are succeeding on inertia rather than Apple's engineering prowess.

Since LTE came out, and Apple chose to sit on their hands and stay with 3G for another year (and probably way before that), Apple has maintained the status quo for a year or two before adopting the otherwise ubiquitous technology. It's frustrating, but I know I feed into it by keeping an apple product in my pocket.

Thats because they lock in their hardware design a minimum of one year before distribution. They have to do that to set the supply chain to work to get everything lined up to manufacture in scale.

They didnt just turn on the manufacturing line for these phones yesterday.
Bulldog73

Absolutely. I know work and production on the 15 has already started. However, if the tech is out there and functional on Android, and Apple doesn't implement it for 2.5 more cycles, that's conscious. And that seems to be consistent at this point.
