Not sure who played Tactical JRPGs back in the day (or still do), but this one is the grand-daddy of them all (along side the original XCOM).

It was written and directed by Yasumi Matsuno, the same guy who would join Square Enix after the completion of Tactics Ogre who would then write and direct Final Fantasy Tactics. This will be Tactics Ogre's second remake (last one was in 2010 for the PSP) and will be released on November 11, 2022.

The 2010 remake, in my opinion, beats out Final Fantasy Tactics as the best Tactical JRPG of all time.

This Tactics Ogre remake was leaked a few months ago as part of a chunk of leaks for multiple Square Enix games that included a remake of Actraiser (came out earlier this year) and remakes of FF 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics. Here's to hoping all the leaks end up being true and we see another remake/remaster of FFT on major consoles again in the near-ish future.

Yeah definitely picking this up for my Steam Deck.

Never did get around to Ogre. But I absolutely mastered FFT and consider it one of the top three games ever made.

I'll be picking this up for sure. Thanks for the heads up. Even if I begrudge the full price for such an old game. Even if it is a remaster.

FFT is one of, if not my favorite games of all time. I've been waiting a long time to play this game.

Wait. Just reread the OP.

FFT is getting a remake too!?

Do you have a link for said leak?

Out today. Reviews are good. This one seems very honest and fair. Curious what y'all that have played it before will think:

Still waiting for mine to be delivered, but have God of War Ragnarok to get through this one before I fire it up. Reviews sound good and keep hearing it being the "definitive" version of the game. Looking forward to seeing the changes.

A few hours in and gotta say, this game is a LOT more in depth than FFT ever was. And still not 100% sure that is a great thing yet.

There is so much behind the scenes math and number crunching that is not readily obvious and that is my most critical complaint to date. Some of which is just wholly unnecessary to me. Like element signs. My arrow fired into an enemy face is going to do half damage because the enemy is fire and I am water? *Wank off gesture* TBF though FFT had this too but if I remember right only affected magic, which makes more sense to me.

People will tell you you need to examine the Warren Report option from top to bottom. Cool, I know that NOW. Thanks youtube. I wonder how many casual players will never unlock the optional quests, characters, scenes, story paths, etc just from poring over this option. Some things are just not obvious. Like why my two level lower archer is doing ONE damage to enemies, even with the strongest bow accessible. Sorry, I don't care if a character is 5 levels lower than an enemy, they should still be able to do something constructive. I know there is a lot of math and incompatibilities but still frustrating to me and it still does not explain everything to me. Makes it far more a chore to keep your entire roster up to snuff than a joy, at least for now.

Aside from fumbling around as a new to Tactics Ogre player and not knowing what to expect, it is still fun but again, man the actual tactics needed in every battle is a lot more than I was expecting....almost as if it should be in the title or something. The biggest difference is that you do not have a full main party per se but rather a huge roster that you use to slot into battle stratagems as you go along. The artificial level cap was (and still kinda is) annoying to me but I see the point of it. It makes you think and adapt because you simply have to. You cannot grind your way to an overwhelming level to defeat the game. It makes most battles a slog of sorts where you have to stay on your toes.

Just a quick update from a noob. Probably sounds like a rant but just pointing out my issues so far and not game breaking to me yet. Still feeling it out. Still liking it a lot, but not quite falling in love with it yet. I think I will with a little more time and adjustment on my end.

Still want FFT ASAP. I would drop this game in a heartbeat if FFT was available now.

Yeah, your two complaints were "features" added to this remaster and sounds like they've not been taken too well so far. Not sure if they would walk back any of the changes, like making the level cap keep you even with the enemy or something instead of two levels below... The artificial level cap I do not remember being in the 2010 version, nor the elemental affinities being as important as they are this go around.

Still working my way through God of War, but I'll be playing this one next - I can say that like FFT's story this one was also pretty amazing (even though I never finished it).

It's good fun but the class system is a little underwhelming. It's like playing Tactics Beta. It's good but I think FFT is the superior game. Still worth picking up for Tactical fans and on sale.

Here's to hoping that FFT Remaster is also on the way since it was on the list of games leaked last year that included this one. I bought this one out of the gate to hopefully remind companies out there that there's still a market for these tactical RPGs (and I really want a FFT Remaster).

I think it's a near certainty. I would expect summer next year.
