looking at something 48" x 24" and need something with a couple drawers. Would prefer a manual crank. Any good brands or brands to avoid?

I've been using an Uplift brand desk for a long time and I'm happy with it. But, its electric and a little pricey for testing to see if you like the concept.

If you're looking for manual crank, you might go with this low-cost outside-the-box option to see how you like a standing desk. Its under $300. I'm getting one for my daughter for her room.

I have an electric one and love it. I am not sure I would if I had to crank it up and down manually.

Newsflash, that was a $200 desk.

Definitely worth about that, but helped me grease the wheels with the wife
