Thinking about switching to Mint Mobile from Sprint/T-Mobile. The monthly plans are OUTRAGEOUS now!

Anyone use Mint Mobile? If so, any thoughts on the service?

We currently use our phones to check email, take pictures and browse the web.

I've been on Mint for 2-3 years. Pleased with the service. I have good coverage in the greater Houston area. Travel to San Antonio once a month and run into some dead spots between there and Fredericksburg and Blanco but I can't complain in the hills. I pay $20 a month for 10gigs of data. I'll be re-upping again in 2 months.

Shameless plug. If anybody is switching from Verizon or ATT you'll get me $100 and you'll get $15 and 3 months free on a 6 month plan. Link below:

I just bought my mom a Mint plan. She only needs the talk and text. Got her the Galaxy A12. Unfortunately, I had to contact Mint's customer service due to a bad SIM card. Worst CS experience I've had in a long, long time. Mint kept referring the issue to their "special technical support team" and promised me a call-back. That was three weeks ago.

I ended up fixing the problem on my own by reading several Reddit threads.

We have 16 accounts using MintMobile, our personal phones, company phones, and company tablets. We have yet to experience any issues at all with the service, and its EXTREMELY cheap compared to everything else out there...not to mention their customer service is VERY responsive if you need them.

I still don't understand why I'm not doing this. $20 per month? So I would pay $40 per month for wife and me as opposed to $120 per month?

Why am I not doing this?

That's what I'm saying. Talked to T-Mobile yesterday and walked out shaking my head. I know I didn't go through all the scenarios, but can't fathom potentially paying over $200/month. Seriously considering Mint Mobile.

I've been with Mint three years. I only have one minor complant. My Pixel 3A's integrated visual voicemail doesn't work well with their service, so I have to use a seperate app.

Mint is a mobile virtual network operator on T-Mobile's network. It's the same product as T-Mobile with different billing and customer support. Payment gets automatically drafted out of my bank account every X number of months. I've never had a problem requiring customer support.

I've been with Mint for 3 years now and pay annually of about $180. Love it and have no plans to change.

I'm mostly on wifi and don't really need any data but the 4gb /month is nice for using google maps.

If you want a more critical thought, I wrote up a short piece a while back about it.

https://texags.com/forums/30/topics/3185741

The short version is: I don't like the service, yet it is cheap as hell. That is my yin and yang. Sometimes it really craps the bed and I have regrets. Most days I get by ok and I have no regrets.

IMHO, Mint should ONLY be considered if you are trying to cut as much cost as possible. It is the cheapest and in my area with my device, that is the only saving grace it has.

Mint uses the last 4 digits of your phone number as your account PIN. With this plus your account number you can transfer service, phone number, etc... There's no way to reset the PIN to something unique. So basically anyone that has any document with your account number plus phone number can get full access to your account.

I transferred service out after learning this but price and service were good.

I tried various MVNO's and its fine most of the time but one really important thing to know is these all have lower priority that postpaid customers of the various networks. Means if a tower is full their customers get service before the MVNO's. Most of the time its fine but it does mean you can have less reliable service.

Verizon's towers are overloaded so you lose connectivity quite a bit from my experience (USmobile and Visible), Tmobile was less so but there are still times where it was unusable recently especially with all the sprint customers beginning to use their towers.

I ultimately went back to tmobile proper because we only have our cell phones so reliability was of the utmost important to us and with all the free lines we were only paying $35/line which wasnt that much more than the MVNO's.

Man, I was about to pull the trigger but this is a big problem. From what I've read there may be some changes in the works, but yeah - that is a bummer.

Yeah, that seem blatantly anti-secure considering the heightened awareness of cyber-security concerns at all companies right now.

I would be shocked if that just isn't the temp process upon setup.

I've been on for ~3/4 a year,
Moved my kids on over the last 6mo

3 unlimited plans, 75$, get a "perk" in return like they will re-comp my Spotify account fee

I'm on the ATT and the kids are on the Verizon towers

We are in Jax, FL

Coverage has been good except coming up from the valley from Kenedy to Stockdale on 123 none of us had service

You don't get priority speeds, so if you are in a congested area at prime hours, you might get 2nd tier speeds I've seen mine from 2-4mbs up to ~150 in general speed is not an issue, at least where we are (I do use Wi-Fi at home)

Overall we like it I ended up convincing my brother in Seguin to get on and my sister/B-I-L who travel for work to get on

I am currently on Visible, I left Verizon for this and I am 100% happy. I have not had a single issue with my service including service in Hawaii, Mexico, and anywhere else Verizon towers are used. I pay $20 total a month (Their rate includes all taxes) for unlimited talk, text, data, and hotspot. I believe my hotspot gets throttled after like 50gb or 20 gb something like that. I have been happy as they do not require any contract so its all month to month. If you try visible and do not like it, then switch to someone else.

Anyone interested in trying Visible, my code is https://www.visible.com/get/33MVWS3

You will get your first month for $5, and I will get a month for $5.

Use it for the kid's phone. He doesn't use it, so no major notes. Cheap enough though.

We have it for the kids phone. It's good enough in the city but doesn't get any service up at our lake cabin where our Verizon and ATT phones have no problem.

Take a look at Tello. Have had this for 2 years and no problems. $10/mon for unlimited talk/text and 1G of data. Runs on T-Mobile's GSm network.

UPDATE -

I am a month in to mint. I have enjoyed it overall. I took a road trip and there was a section of the florida panhandle where i had no signal but i am unable to say if i would have had service with verizon as i have not been through there with it. Probably a 10 mile stretch of I-10. I have had 3 calls dropped, 2 on the road trip and i believe one randomly driving, but i am not sure. I would say that sometimes the phone calls are less than perfect, but it is not so troublesome that I would want to go back. Internet speeds have been just fine on my 4G phone and my wifes phone connects to 5G just fine but i am not sure what the speeds are. I bought a 6 month plan and will enjoy not having a bill whatsoever over the next 5 months.

My wife flipped over from Cricket when they couldn't support her new Pixel 6. Mint supported it fine and is even cheaper than Cricket. Haven't heard her complain about the service.

Finally switched my phone to Mint Mobile today. Fairly easy process but, of note, you have to remove your old physical SIM card if you do the eSIM transfer. That wasn't in the instructions so I was unable to text or call until I figured that out.

Also, I have really sporadic bars and I'm smack dab in the middle of North Dallas which is concerning. I'm on wifi here at home, but connection keeps going in and out for cellular.

Will be extremely hesitant to convert wife over with me until I test run this a bit.

We moved to Mint in July and have been pleased enough to sign up for the 12month plan. In busy areas I can definitely see that our Mint 4g/5g data is de-prioritized but for normal use it's fine.
No issues with call quality. Using iPhones.

I'm sitting here reading this comment and thinking the same thing. So I go to my ATT account to start poking around and seeing how much I would save, and forgot something;

I got a free iPhone 13 from ATT back in early 2022 when I traded in my 11. And I got that 11 free when I traded in my previous phone; and this goes back all the way to my 6. The last phone I paid for was my 4 IIRC. I've had a 4/6/7/9/11/13.

So while I realize, darn, I can't switch to Mint because I'm only 1/3 of the way into getting my kickback for the new phone, I also realized maybe I wouldn't save that much anyway, because I've gotten 5 free phones from them over the last decade.

This is a ~$750*5 benefit over ~10 years.

So while AT&T is still probably more expensive than Mint, I can do some quick math;
We pay ~$75 ea and have 2 phones, and Mint for unlimited (we both consistently use ~12-15gb) is $30.

The free phone benefit comes to ~$30 a month, lowering my savings to just $15 a month if I switched to Mint. Not near as much as I would think by reading threads like this. This of course doesn't include any deals they may be offering. I just looked at current pricing.

Maybe we could cut back a little bit and get to the 10gb mint plant which is $20, now the savings is $25 a month.. starting to go back to my initial feeling.. maybe we should do it.

But we have to pay our phones off first, otherwise our savings is drastically lessened.

Yeah, that's a big benefit on the free phones. We haven't gotten a deal like that in some years. I just bought my wife a new iphone 14 PRO because her 12 was trash and hoping to get a $400 rebate for trade-in. Still rolling on my XR.

In the meantime, I fully converted both of us to Mint.

PROS:
  • Going to save ~$1,200 per year

CONS:
  • Have a few dropped calls per week even in heavy coverage areas. Haven't had dropped calls since the early days of cellular. Annoying as hell but worth the savings.
  • We drive to the coast and back several times per year and there two dead spots of several miles as you get into South Texas. Tried to offset this trip by activating my wife's Wi-Fi hot spot in her car. Lol. Wi-Fi to her car is somehow worse than airline Wi-Fi which I didn't think was possible so will cancel that this week as its worthless.
