Just wanted to get your thoughts on playing Xbox one x on either a 4K tv versus an ultra wide monitor. I've got an AW3418DW, just recently put a 4k Samsung tv in the living and thinking about moving the xb1x. Man does the picture look good on the 4k and I don't think I can get past the black bars on the monitor. Maybe the new Xbox series x will support ultra wide?

Doubt it as most games are not developed with ultrawide in mind. 16x9 or 16x10 will be your standard still. If it does allow this setting, it will most likely just stretch the 16x9 or 16x10 picture to fill.

I thought consoles are competing with PCs, seems like an opportunity to close this gap

Ultrawide is not even that popular on PC for gaming due to the few titles that can actually support it nativly. Now its all about 4k, 144hz+, curved ect. Not the width. 16x9 and 16x10 will be the standard for many more years to come. I would almost classify ultrawide as a workplace standard rather than gaming. Thats where its use really shines.

Lots of titles do the below to make it look like they support ultrawide when its actually a hindrance to you in disguise.

They're not really competing and this isn't a significant feature.

That's a little misleading... A standard sized ultrawide is 34", which is the same height as a 27" but wider, not the same width but much shorter. The vertical resolution is the same as well.

PC gaming is superior to console for so many more reasons than just the aspect ratio...

His point is that developers crop the image instead of actually supporting the aspect ratio (fov is negativity impacted I guess). Not sure if he is right but that claim is not impacted by size of the monitor.

True but that has zero to do with ultrawide vs not for monitors...
