Best projector screen for a fairly bright room?

I just got a projector and wow it is awesome...at night. But it isn't in a mancave so I can't always control lights/the sun/etc. What's the best screen for brighter rooms? We usually watch at night anyway so most of the time it doesn't matter, but when it does, it would be nice to be able to see a little better.

Fixed or motorized screen? Acoustically transparent or not?

Keep in mind that you'll lose a little contrast when watching at night in order to get a better picture during the day with any of the ambient light rejecting screens.

It's hard to say what would be best without knowing the specifics of your room.

I'd recommend playing with the calculator on Projector Central's website. Because the distance from the screen and size of the screen impact the brightness, you really need to find one spec'd for your specific room.

Also, check out Silver Ticket Screens. It makes quite a difference. Figure out which material would be best for your room and use that in the calculator above. They are much cheaper than other screens but perform great! It's what we have in ours. (They sell on Amazon, so order from there.)

I don't care either way. It's not a fancy media room, by any means! Just want something that might make it a little better during the day (even just projected onto a plain wall it's great at night.)

our living room is bright -- likely will add blinds of some sort

The correct answer. The other part is lumens.

I spent years installing professional AV equipment. The absolute smallest projectors we sold were 5000 lumens. You could leave the lights on and still get a good image as long as there wasn't a light pointed directly at the screen.

Projector technology is changing as fast as flat screen TV technology. If I was you, I'd invest in a really good screen, since this will last you over multiple generations of projectors. A quality fixed-frame screen will run you between $1500 and $3000. If you want retractable or electric masking, the cost will go up a fair amount. Don't skimp on the quality of the screen. I'd recommend against getting a used projector. Not only is the technology changing fast, but you have to worry about compatibility with new content and equipment, and they don't last forever. You'll almost certainly need to replace the bulb in order to get full performance, and will probably have to have it thoroughly cleaned to eliminate the dust that accumulates inside. And you probably won't have any warranty.
