The white box on your wall is the "modem", not the black router.

You can ditch it by using a switch and spoofing the MAC address.

This worked great. I'm going to start tinkering with a pfsense router and switch my wifi router over to AP mode...

I also need to call and complain about my price.

What speeds are you getting with this method? I'm still wondering how to tap into that last 600Mbps (only getting around 400-450Mbps over WiFi with a Linksys EA8500 Max-Stream AC2600). All I did was put the AT&T modem/router in IP passthrough. I didn't mess with reassigning IP addresses or DMZ stuff. Everything works, I just don't know if there is something I'm missing to get every bit out of my fiber.

You're not going to get gigabit over wifi with a built in Dell wifi card in a laptop. Stop running speed test and stop worrying about it.

The benefit I get is that I can download a file to my server at 60MB/s while still streaming something. You'll benefit from multiple people being able to stream and download stuff at the same time. With gigabit internet, you're going to run into limitations on other end of your connections.

Stop obsessing about it or go ahead and downgrade to 300/300.

Ha, I realize I'm not going to get 1gig over wifi, as I've said in this thread already. A lot of the networking advanced settings stuff is over my head and there is all kinds of different and conflicting information out there. I'm really just trying to figure out if I did it correctly or if there is something I missed. Now I'm going to go run a few more speed tests.

With the ATT box in bypass, using my nighthawk as a router, my internet speed was severely throttled.

I would get full speed when using only the ATT box, but by adding my own router, the speed went to crap. So I removed it.
My internet died this morning,... If it doesn't come back by this evening when I get home I'll redo the setup and see how long it lasts this time.

I ordered a mini-pc to use as a pfsense router, so I think I'm going to try the bypass method where you keep the residential gateway connected to do authentication but the wan traffic still bypasses it.

Most of this is just because I'm interested in learning more about this kind of thing.

Make sure to check out pfBlockerNG on pfSense. It's like pi-hole on steroids.

What's your Eero setup? I'm seeing systems with 3 Eero Pros, some with 1 Pro and 2 Beacon extenders? I'm in a 3,000 sq ft single story ranch and wondering if 3 Pros is overkill.

Over kill
I have a 3000 2 story.

One pro next to the router with 2 beacons is plenty for me. Since yours is a single story more spread out maybe one extra beacon

Got mine on black Friday for a steal on amazon.

Set it up with the exact name and password as your old modem and all your devices will reconnect automatically without having to redo them all

Weird that 3 Eero Pros bundle is the same price ($399) as the 1 Pro and 2 Beacon extenders bundle.

Pretty sure I got it all for $100 off maybe more
It might have been 200 total. Can't remember but I remember it was a lot off

I just got pfsense installed Monday and started messing with it tonight. Figured out freebsd (not that difference from Linux) and started to learn ssh... I'll figure out how to run my next plex server headless...

Are you on the AT&T Pace 5268AC? If so, it might be that. This gateway/router had a firmware issue for almost a damn year that prevented you from using your own router. If you tried to bridge your own router your speed immediately dropped to about 50mbs. They finally rolled out a firmware upgrade a couple of months ago that fixed that but then broke telephone wifi. Not sure if they fixed the latter yet.

I have this gateway/router. Just two weeks ago I contacted AT&T via chat to simply upgrade to a newer router because mine is now 5 yrs old so I assume there is better HW available. I've read the BGW is a better piece of hardware, so I requested that. Here is how that played out:

Chat #1: Request the BGW. Chat guy says no problem...I've put the order in and you will get it tomorrow.

Next day I get a Pace 5268AC. Interesting. This is what I already own. I return it.

Chat #2: Hey, you sent me the same router I already own. I requested the BGW...."Oh, sorry sir, yes we have a known defect in our ordering system but I can override that and I promise you will get the BGW this time."

I get a Pace again. I return it.

Chat #3: Hey, y'all screwed up again. Last guy told me it was a defect in your ordering system but I still got a Pace. Can you escalate me? "We don't need to do that sir. I know what the problem is and I assure you you will get the BGW this time."

I get a Pace again. I return it.

Chat #4: I went scorched earth out of the gate and was immediately escalated to a Supervisor. He promptly told me the front line Chat folks have no authority nor ability to send me the router of my choosing. THEN WHY THE F^CK WERE THEY TELLING ME THEY COULD AND TELLING ME THEY WERE OVERRIDING THE SYSTEM TO ENSURE I WOULD GET WHAT I ASKED FOR?!?!

The Supervisor told me that the only way to get the non-Pace gateway/router is to have them roll a truck to your house and have them set it up.

Worst company in America.

Yep, I agree it's *****

That's why I don't use it, and bypass it as mentioned.

Unfortunately, their CS sucks, and they really don't give a **** about your wasted time or frustration.

I would too but I'm frankly concerned it would get f^cked up. I'm just not that router savvy anymore and the thought of getting into e settings and jacking with all of that is like reading Chinese.

Costco has the new Netgear Nighthawk Mesh System Wifi6 (3-pack) for $199.99 right now. Great deal and can cover 4,500 sq ft.. NETGEAR Nighthawk Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 System, 3-pack

On a different note, It seems the ATT fiber modem (BGW210-700) does not have a true bridge mode. Are y'all just doing IP Passthrough? IF so what are your settings?
Teddy Perkins
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I followed the instructions here and just put it in IP Passthrough mode but I have a suspicion that there is more that I could do to get even better speeds.
