1/4000 of sec shot right at 3rd contact (end of totality). Notice the Sun's white light (photosphere) just beginning to shine through the valleys of the Moon. Also, chromosphere (pink layer approx 300 to 1200 miles above surface of Sun) still visible above it. Zoom in for the huge prominence loop at 10 o'clock! I'm told the large spike at 7:30 is the same type but on edge! Obligatory contributor image as well ;-).

I will see your expensive photography equipment and raise you a pinhole projector I made from a cardboard box, some plain white printer paper (screen inside), duct tape, and a cap from a can of spray paint.

In the words of my daughter, "Dad, I can't believe this actually worked."

Ha! Awesome! My gear is pretty cheap crap. See your fantastic pinhole cam and raise one pan hole cam!

There are fantastic composites of images all over the interwebs of the ASE of 10.14.23. I decided to stack all of my images (captured with a wobbly tracker) into one composite. The great ring of fire slinky:

Happy New Year Ags! Time to start gearing up for 4/8/24! A fellow eclipse chaser and I have started a podcast about total solar eclipses. We have experts and newbies alike talking totality. Clear Skies!

We will be at garner state park for the weekend in one of the shelter sites. Come say hello if you see an ugly dude with a hot wife and three cute little daughters.

There are a couple of long threads on other forums.
(Edit: I see you are already on it… perhaps, this will help others)

Any recommendations on experiments adults and kids can do during an eclipse? On your latest podcast episode I heard several references to "sharp and fuzzy shadows" and had to look that one up.

Setting up a sharp and fuzzy shadow station would be great for kids! I'm doing a temperature experiment… bought 6 sensors off Amazon ($10 each) that connect to your phone and record temps via Bluetooth.

Stagger them on a pole up as high as you can (10-20ft). You can see temp changes, go back later to stack the graphs, and see how the levels drop from the ground up as the Sun goes out! Counter-intuitive to what a kid (or adult) might think happens! Depends on the age of the kids as to if you want to go this route!

Dr. Gordon Telepun's book (online download $9.99) is an excellent resource to guide you. He also has YouTube vids on the subject of experiments.

Throw out / secure a white sheet on the ground and look for the waves of shadow bands that sweep across like snakes slithering (from 5 min before and to 5 min after totality). The pinpoint of light remaining near totality is affected by the atmosphere… same light instability that causes stars to twinkle (and planets not so much)

It's two weeks out, so it could obviously change. Weather channel is currently predicting partly cloudy skies on the 8th in Dallas. I'll be so bummed if it's cloudy that day. Stay tuned.

considering the unpredictability of spring weather, i'd consider partly cloudy skies a win. anything but overcast/rainy.

Collection of models here (ECMWF, ICON, GFS, NAM, HRRR). No need to worry yet; the models agree 3 days out, plan accordingly. https://weather.us/model-charts

Getting super excited and also splurged on some stuff to get ready.
Not looking to get too involved in tech.

1. eclipse glasses
2. eclipse 2x magnification viewers
3. gopro wide angle and capture everything
4. 12x56 binoculars for totality viewing with tripod
5. phone attachment to binoculars to take some pics

Not sure if I want to mess with the binoculars photos using a phone though. Fidgety and will only have a little more than 3 minutes to take it all in.

Am I missing anything? Maybe some eclipse filters for the binoculars for pre- and post-totality.

Current cloudcover forecast:

Still plenty of time for things to change.
