Hi nerds. I've been redirected a couple of times to a survey site with the message that I'm eligible to win a $1000 amazon gift card. The site is us dot hyte dot date. I haven't responded - just kill the browser (safari - this is on my iPad) and start over.

Questions:
1) How do I determine what type of scam this is?
2) How do I prevent safari from redirecting like this?
3) Is it possible that I've picked up a virus or malware on my iPad? If so how do I get rid of it?

1. Yes it's a scam. The type of scam is inconsequential.

2. Not a safari user and don't know many, but I'd probably search for "prevent safari browser redirect ipad" (or something along those lines in google.

3. While this is always a possibility for any connected device, I'd say likely not the case on an iPad. Dump your browser cache in settings and see if it continues.

I second clear your browser history / cache / cookies. I had this happen randomly on my phone on chrome and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason, it would occur on legit sites I go to all the time. It was extra bad where it would take up the whole screen prevent me from closing the tab so i would have to kill chrome and sometimes restart my phone. After i cleared my history / cache / cookies it has yet to happen to me again.

Usually this is a rogue ad causing the redirect. Most legitimate sites use a service that has a collection of ads to display. The services typically screen the ads that they allow in their pool, but sometimes a malicious one gets in that can redirect your browser when it loads.

The only way I've been able to prevent this is through an ad-blocker, but those are more difficult to get on phones/tablets.

LOL literally just happened to me on this thread.

I started using Dolphin for iPad due to the many redirects on this and other sites.
