I'm exhausting all my options so I wanted to get feedback here as well.

Story:
Facebook account hacked in middle of the night Tuesday night (someone in Turkey). Got emails notifying me of potential unauthorized use and to click a link to confirm. Didn't see it (obviously) until following morning and by that point, I couldn't access it bc the hacker removed my phone number and contact email, leaving only an old Hotmail email I haven't used in nearly 9 years, hence, can't access it.

I need help figuring out next steps. Hotmail isn't allowing me to reconcile that old account and I can't get a person on the phone to figure all this out.

Any helpful tips or next steps?

Are you sure the email you got was legit? Did the link take you to a page where you entered your username and password?

Sounds like it was a phishing scam, with the emails.

Emails were from Facebook support

what was the email address they sent it from?

I've read where someone was able to send them an ID, like a passport or something to get their account unlocked.

I'm sure they have procedures in place for things just like this.

Sounds like they did you a favor. Ditch FB.

I did get an email from Facebook security (valid) requesting photo ID, which I sent to them, only to get a response back that things had been sorted out with my account, and I still cannot access my account.

The Facebooksupport.com emails are a phishing scheme.

Emails I was responding to/receiving were from support.facebook

Seems kinda weird that FB would send you an email alerting you to suspicious activity and ask you to confirm, only to allow the unconfirmed activity to continue to the point of changing vital info on the account.

Not really. That would mean they'd need to lock your account. Not responding to the notice is probably thought to be you acknowledging the legitimacy of the activity.

On the rare occasions I need to deal with something that looks like potential phishing, I go to the company's website and find their customer support phone or email myself rather than responding directly to the potential phisher.

Did you have 2FA enabled?

Since I don't know what 2FA means, probably not...still trying to figure this out

No I was already locked out by that point. This whole thing would've been cleared up if there was a way to actually talk to a live person about it from Facebook.

At this point I'm over not being able to access the account - it's what the hackers are trying to do with whatever information they got

Look at the header on the email. It's possible the could have spoofed the email address.

You need two factor authentication set up on every account that allows it.

This is the only way to roll going forward on all accounts...too easy to gain access these days otherwise.

Sounds like, by all accounts now, OP got phished.

It's incredible how often people don't realize they're getting attacked. I had to stop a coworker on her way to the bank with a cashier's check last week, because she got a cryptolocker malware that she was about to pay $300 for to the hackers.

She argued with me for 30 minutes that it was legit and she hadn't been hacked.

My account was already hacked prior to me even trying to attempt to reconcile it. How does that equate to being phished if the damage was done before I even got a chance to prevent it?

Did you attempt to log in before clicking the link in the email? If not, you may have been phished and given them your password when you "reset" it.

The way it happened was that I opened up my Bible app, which is connected to my facebook, when I realized it was signing me to my Bible or FB account. I then went straight to the FB login page and entered my info and it said my email was wrong. That prompted me to check my email which I saw multiple emails from FB support with an account recovery code, then another saying my pw was reset, then another saying my account was accessed with an android device in New York, followed by another showing a new cell number was added, immediately followed by another one saying my actual cell number was deleted.

I got 2 more emails after that, one saying that someone accessed my account and a final one saying that my p/w had been changed.

That all happened from 12:37 am to 12:44 am - obviously I was asleep and had no way of knowing what was happening. I tried to log in around 5:30am...by then it was too late

You may want to change your email password. If they did a password recovery, that could be compromised as well. If this were a phishing scam, it would be a very elaborate one. Not sure how to help with the Facebook part. They say you can reverse the change with a special link in the email change notification. I think you said you tried that though.

Still trying to find out if anyone knows anyone at FB that can shed some light on this...

A friend of mine had something similar happen to his wife's account but her profile and everything was changed to arabic
