Laptop for a Sophmore Accounting Major

Son's Dell is 3 or 4 years old and apparently giving him issues. Has started mentioning "needing" a new laptop. It was bought in high school and was a cheaper model to begin with.

He seems to think a Macbook is what he needs. From his logic, this appears to be based more on compatibility with his mobile devices and "light image editing" for the go pro he has apparently purchased.

I was under the impression that Macs were not as good for Accounting type / Excel heavy applications. When I asked him, he responded that the guy at the computer store was a business marketing major and it worked fine for him (bs and not even a good comparison) and that lots of people have them in his classes and they seem to be doing fine.

I am working under the assumption that he just WANTS a mac. I am not an Apple guy. Know nothing about their computers other than they appear to be way overpriced.

Am I correct in my general thought process here? Is there any advantage to the Mac for his actual major (I couldn't care less about his fun uses.) A quick look at the latest Dell ad in my email says I could get a well equipped laptop with a faster processor, more storage, etc for 500 to 800. A quick look at BB says the Macs start around 1200.

Need to decide if I need to push the Windows system or give him the option of making up the difference in cost and getting the Mac if he wants. Should be the last laptop I have to buy for him either way.

Windows is better for excel but either one should be fine for undergraduate accounting courses.

I would go with your plan. Offer $500 or so and have him pay the difference if he want a mac. If you look on slickdeals, you should find a more than capable windows laptop for that amount.

He should be able to add office for cheap later through the school.

If he is looking at a career in accounting, there is probably a less than 2% chance he uses an Apple computer professionally. I don't know if that sways the opinion one way or another.

Having said that, a mac could easily accommodate any excel needs he will have through college.

He does not need it.

Give him $$ and let him pay the difference.

Thanks for the replies. Confirms what I was thinking.

Make him work to buy his own.

Just make sure it has Excel. It doesn't have to be flashy.

Macs are the best laptops in many regards (not all, of course). Excel runs just as well on them as on Windows.

Not sure about other accounting software, though.

Last time I used excel on a mac (2 yrs ago)there were some big differences. The main thing that stood out was F4 didn't cycle through reference latching options.

Do th VB based macros work on the Mac OS version?

2 years ago they were running Office 2011. They run 2016 now.

Dunno about the VB bit.

The F4 deal has been around since the 90s on the PC

I am fine with providing what he needs. He pays for a lot of his stuff. If he were in a graphics heavy discipline, where I understand that Macs are supposed to be superior to Windows PCs I would buy one, or at least consider it.

My goal is to establish what is a need and what is a want. The replies confirmed what I thought. He does not need the very best laptop on my dime,

I am going to spec out a decent Dell (based on my opinion) and he can choose to take that or the cash toward a Mac. Not going to spend two or three times as much for him to have a cool toy.

If you buy the Dell Latitude it comes with a 3 year warranty.

Inspiron is just 1 year warranty......

Yes, at least the one I have (2011 Office). I don't know if there is 100% compatibility or not, but I search for and add macros to my sheets all the time and they run fine.

There's always Parallels, and the other Windows emulators. My MBP from late 2011 is still going strong and I have no plans to replace it anytime soon -- and I will probably just replace the hard drive with an SSD and keep going. This is with reasonably high horsepower usage of Logic Pro (9) on there. These laptops typically last longer than the standard Wintel laptops for whatever reason -- from my experience and that of others I know.

Parallels is not needed.

Boot camp is free and a better solution.

Hate to say this, but your son is trying to convince you into an expensive, flashy computer that he doesn't need.

If you're looking for a reliable laptop, get him the HP V series. I have HPV and don't regret it.

Kid is going to a state school. He can get HPV for free.

Literally any computer will work for him. He just wants to have a Mac. That said, Macs are the more durable option with better resale value.

No worries, I thought my whole post implied I understood he was doing that. And that I was not biting.

Told him that we are happy to buy him a Latitude Laptop with nice specs and a 3 year warranty (thanks for that nugget Dubi) or give him that amount of cash to put toward the Mac of his choice with at least a three year warranty. He is "looking into his options."

Tell him to lay off the porn and his computer won't have "issues" anymore.
