Is Google Docs dumb?

Hey Nerdery,

How do you all feel about Google Docs? I've run into an issue from time to time with Google Docs access. I wanted to see if yall knew anything about it. It's entirely possible that I'm just dumb.

There have been times where someone would share access to a work file with my work email. When I follow the link, Google would ask me to log in with my personal gmail account. If I did that, it would fail because access wasn't shared with my personal email, but my work email. If I tried to log-in with my work email, well... it's never been associated with google before, so there's nothing to log into.

Am I just doing it wrong entirely? Is Google Docs dumb, or am I?

Thanks in advance. I think I have an alternative solution (a function on one of our work sites) that would work for what we want, but I'd still like to figure out how to Google Doc.

Whoever shares a doc with you needs to send it to a Google account.

Not true

You can create a google account with a non gmail address.

Or

Person sharing can set permissions to edit for anyone with the link.

This. It's still young and evolving but they have been tweaking it to make more and more user friendly.

Interesting. Thanks all.

I recall a time (2010ish) when I could access it with a yahoo account no problem. Then came a time when Google started to combine all their programs and couldn't disconnect YouTube from Google+ from this or that or all these things I never wanted joined together.

Weird stuff. But, thanks for giving me the info I was looking for!

It is not accessing it with a Yahoo account, it's accessing it with a google account that has a Yahoo email address.

It's a subtle difference, but hopefully explains it a bit better.

It does, it's just somewhat cryptic. I'm not exactly sure how to link my work email to a Google account, for example... and I'm not entirely sure if I'd want to if that means things like my youtube account would be at all crossing paths with my group work projects. Not that I have anything to hide with my YouTube favorites, or that my coworkers could just access my YouTube page, but it just seems unnecessary and somewhat intrusive.

This is a pretty good example to set it up with a non-gmail account. You'll just verify with whatever outside email account you choose.

Everytime you sign you would sign in as rhutton@ anythingbutgmail.com

From there, I believe it automatically sets up a g+ account, but obviously you don't need to do crap with it. Hopefully this is help and not more confusing.

My company has recently attempted to incorporate Google Apps into our day-to-day operations for collaborative purposes. Since Google Apps has approximately 0.00000001% of the functionality and features of Microsoft Office, we are also keeping Microsoft Office.

I can personally say that using Google Apps for work purposes is a complete joke. The "transition" they hoped for has turned into an unmitigated disaster. While it's nice being able to collaborate on documents in real-time, we find out every day just how many features Google Apps is missing (and has been missing for years, suggesting they won't be added anytime soon). I'm not talking about advanced functionality like VBA/macros, but even basic things like being able to copy and insert cells/rows/columns is missing.

It's kind of sad watching the firm leaders try and pump what they know is garbage because they've dropped so much money on it already. Virtually nobody uses Google Apps for anything other than the most basic of spreadsheets or letters, but the IT people keep on sending out emails practically begging us to "try out Google Apps". Google Apps is like the tiny kid on the playground with no friends who keeps begging to play football with the larger kids, and repeatedly gets told "no". It's depressing.

Take note, corporate America: Google Apps costs less than Office 365 for a reason. That reason is because it sucks. You're not saving any money by shelling out for Google Apps nobody uses AND Microsoft Office.

I used to be all about google...until Google apps. I tried to like them. I really did. And for basic use honestly they were fine. But in no way will they ever be in shouting distance of MS office.

After fishing around a bit I have finally come to terms that MS office is the best. In numbers, both sales and use, functionality, support, ease of learning and now with the cloud drive, networking and conferencing are pretty much the best out there.

MS office is the 800 lb gorilla in this field. And rightly so. Their product works and it works well and nearly everyone uses it or has the ability to use it.
