Computer shutting off then turning on randomly

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have a custom built machine that seems to be shutting off (improperly) and turning back on randomly and I'm trying to diagnose it. I've looked inside and everything appears to be installed correctly and it's free of dust so I'm leaning towards an issue with the power supply. Can anyone make a recommendation about where I could take this to get it checked out and hopefully fixed? I'm in the general BCS area.

Did it work normally then start messing up? Or is this a new build and has always done this?

I had an issue with mine coupla days ago. Turns out the cpu was overheating and it kept shutting off to prevent a meltdown.

But if you have a multimeter the PSU is easy to check.

It's pretty much always done this but there was a period of time where it didn't do it. It's strange because it's like a failed restart. It shuts down and turns on quickly, leading me to believe it's not an overheating of the cpu (which I also recently cleaned). It's like it loses power for a second and then it comes back. Sort of like a brown out.

I'll look into the multimeter. Thanks.

I've seen that behavior with a bad memory stick

I used to use ultimate boot cd to run mem tests, it does quite a few other things also

Not kidding. Only know one person who's ever takin a computer there. That's partly why I started the thread. Don't want to take this somewhere that will **** it up.

Are your restart and power jumpers switched on the MB?

Not that I know of, although it's been some time since I put it together. I don't think I even recall how to check this.

Thanks to whoever mentioned ultimateboot. I ran a RAM diagnostic and it came back negative. Still leaning power supply issue. Maybe improper grounding or just a faulty one.

Brazos Valley Computers next to Burdett's has always done me right. I take all of business computers to them.
