Elite: Dangerous Xbox One Launch Trailer

Supposedly (according to the game's twitter), it will go on sale in 5 minutes. Anyone else ready to go tear up space? Post your gamertag if you pick this up!

CQC is not in the game at launch, but will come to XB1 in July, and PC/Mac later in 2015.

I've been asking for some good space flight sims for a while now. I'll do the demo for sure (supposedly all these new "preview" games have demos). I'd probably be all over it but Batman is launching next week. Will see, but can't argue with the amount of good stuff coming!

Initial impressions - extremely fun... but extremely frustrating. Took me 30 minutes of trying to land in the tutorial mission to realize I had to turn in 180 degrees to be properly "aligned".

It could stand a bit more direction. But it's massive and beautiful. It struggles with frame rate jumping in/out of hyperspace. But overall, it's really cool. I'm just an incredible noob at it right now.

There's a definitive learning curve. But I'm starting to come to terms with it. I still forget to retract my landing gear at times though, which is always frustrating when I can't figure out why it won't let me jump to hyperspace. Disengaging from supercruise is a *****. I always overshot my target until I realized that there was a blue-ish color code near my throttle that if you place the throttle within the blue area, it will automatically reduce the speed to allow you to easily exit supercruise. The universe is huge so it's easy to get lost. They give you a fair bit of coin to start with. I'm trying to get a Cobra before I go to bed. It's got the right combo of firepower, speed, and cargo room for my piracy/smuggling/bounty hunting operations that I'm aiming to get into.

One thing to note is that mission timers tick in real time, so you want to finish any missions you take before leaving the game because otherwise you'll get hit with penalties for not completing them.

Just a heads up the demo is only an hour long. It's enough to get your feet wet, but hardly enough to feel any level of comfort with the controls. Docking and all that stuff is a ***** and a half to get used to but the more you do it, the closer to second nature it becomes.

Since it's all online, if anyone decides to purchase the game, shoot me a message and I'll fly over to whatever sector of space you're calling home.

Yeah, the free trial was over way to fast. But the game seems awesome. I love the all alone feel of space. I'd love to sink some time I to it, but with Batman coming out next week I'll probably have to pass for now.

So... the game definitely requires your attention. I bought a Hauler and was going to engage in some legit trading. Bought a bunch of rare materials and plotted some 30-jump trek to a distant system. While I was making the jumps, I was texting a friend. When your FTL drive charges up it generates heat. Didn't realize how much. Started charging the drive, wrote a text, meanwhile the temps go off the chart. Couldn't warp out because I was facing the wrong direction, couldn't stop spooling up my engines because my mind blanked on the key combination for it. My engines overheated and damaged my cargo bay doors and I lost my entire bounty 3 jumps from my destination.

I bought the stuff for about 30k and was set to make about 300-400k at the destination.

I had to turn the game off, I was so pissed. I actually might wipe my save and start over, it was that bad.

Oh man! That's what I've heard about the game. I love it for that fact, but yeah its complicated with no hand holding.

During my 1 hour in which I learned little, I was doing the jump training. I couldn't figure out how to slow down my engines to cruising speed. I wasn't in hyper space, but I was at that faster speed setting. Kept flying past my mark and the slow down button did nothing. So I looked over at my control panel and scrolled to the systems tab, hit that button to turn off the engines and yep... That stopped it right away. Like turning off they key to your car doing 80. Obviously not the typical way, but I couldn't figure out how to slow down otherwise. Only had an hour so I skipped around the training... But I hear even after all the training there is a ton you don't know.

Haha, yeah. Definitely no handholding. If you have the thrust set in the little area highlighted blue, it will automatically slow you to a safe speed as you approach the target, which will then allow you to exit that cruising speed by using the same combo that puts you in it (a button + up on the d-pad).

The cool thing about turning your engines completely off is it allows you to do some really nutso stuff. This was the video that got me interested in the game in the first place:

Tried the demo and thoughts the controls were awful. If I pick this one up it will definitely be on PC.

That video!!! Oh man... I might just have to get this game. That kind of stuff is so awesome! There is no end game to this thing... you just do your thing. So tempting!

Watched a couple internet videos during a break earlier... man this game is so deep. Problem is, you can sink HOURS into it to accomplish basic tasks. That's awesome from a sim standpoint... not so awesome for a guy that is currently getting mentally drained at work and has had a hard time getting game time at night because he's too sleepy!

Would probably be worth it if I can convince myself up front that I'm not gonna have a ton of time for it, I will be the weakling in the galaxy, but just enjoy the little things!

Is there a way to team up and work together? I am in the same boat, but maybe a few of us in this situation could get together and a get a small time gang going.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Kampfers can answer that. We live texted a little last night and he said you can sorta party up but I didn't get all the info.

Watching another vid during my lunch break and this guy bought some 3rd party pc software that lets him use voice commands in this game. They totally need to do that for Kinect for many of these commands.
Kampfers
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I definitely hope there is kinect support down the road, I've had the same thought.

I'll try and flesh out the multiplayer a little more here, although I'm still not 100% certain how it works.

There are 3 ways we will eventually be able to play multiplayer together. #1 will be in CQC. Small space multiplayer battles specifically designed for PVP. This is supposed to release in July and is not currently available.

#2 is through the creation of a private server. That option is currently grayed out on my XB1 and I'm not sure if it is available or whether I need to be in a party first to start it or what. But this would be you and a friend (or two? Not sure the player cap) in the massive open world without any other online players interfering.

Finally, there is a system called "Wings" that allows you to partner with those in your online game instance. You could potentially use this to partner up with a few friends, the problem being you would need to both be in their game instance and also find them in game. But this would be co-op in the main game mode. I think It is theoretically possible according to what I've read I just don't know how to make it happen and don't have anyone to test it with.

It's been tough finding details on this, especially with regards to the XB1. If anyone does more research and figures it out better, I'd love to hear.

Also, FWIW I have based myself on George Lucas station.

Is the demo available now for XB1?

Yes. It's a 1 hour timer demo... you can only do the training (which you won't even finish), but it gives you a very general idea about the controls and what not.

There are some cool PC videos on youtube with guys just talking about the game when it released months ago on PC. I've picked up a lot more details on how to play the game that way.

Awesome. I will download it when I make it home. Anyone streaming it on Twitch? Might be able to pick up some pointers that way, too.

One of the cool things about this game as opposed to no mans sky is that the star map was created from real astronomical data. So some 150k systems are legitimately how they would appear in real life.

Of course, that's only a small fraction of the some 400 billion visitable systems, but still. Literally every star you can see in the distance of every system is a place you can travel to.

Furthermore, at E3 today, E announced that planetary landings and exploration are still in pipeline. Those features will hit PC first, I wouldn't expect them until mid 2016 most likely.

Also I'm fairly confident I can get the multiplayer to work if either of you end up pulling the trigger. Here's how. There are some changes for the XB1 version (friends has not been implemented yet, and voice chat must be done through the party app), but hopefully we can get it done. CrottyKid, I'm not sure if we're friends, but my GT is the same as my nick here.

Here is a compendium of helpful websites

They even have radio stations for traders. It's cute.

I just bought a Cobra Mk. 3. Going to use it to continue trading until I can upgrade into a Type-6 transporter. At that point (100t cargo capacity), I should be able to do more simple trading rather than the current rare trading route I'm running (which, while insanely profitable, is also long and will be dangerous once the world becomes more populated with players). Then I'll start using the proceeds from trading to get a sick combat ship.

That's the nice thing about making money now. Once the world starts to fill up and everyone else starts to make those rare runs (the one I'm doing is a version of the most popular one in the PC version), I'll have a nice fighter to interdict them and steal their ****. Mwahahah.

Oh - and one last tip. Before you sell a ship, first sell off any upgrades. You can sell upgrades back at full price (or at least downgrade them to the cheapest component), but when you sell the ship you take a 10% hit on it and all installed items. So sell the upgrades, then the ship.

I bought it! Such a sucker, but I'm looking forward to being an early adopter (before official release) and hopefully I can be somewhat powerful when the game comes online and I can mess with noobs.

Haven't officially started my career yet... just did the training and watched all training videos. The videos are pretty important so watch those if you are getting the game.

Not sure what I will do when I start... probably take on a couple missions just to get going and get a few upgrades and then I'll start smuggling/trading to get going. Maybe I'll get lucky and collect some bounties if there are low level guys I can take out. I guess the point is there is no point... you just gotta figure out the best options to make your way in the galaxy.

And if they do open up landing on planets that would be awesome too. Hopefully this game keeps growing along the way and I can keep picking it up here and there.

Add me: The Aggie

Kampfers and I joined a "wing" together earlier so we are getting some of the MP groupings figured out. He knows a lot more than me, but I know a lot of the basic essentials which aren't easy to learn.

After we formed that wing and you left, I got properly trolled. Found a human player, had almost destroyed him, in mere seconds he jumped out and his buddy jumped in behind me and killed me.

Boom, 100k credits down the drain for insurance.

That sounds about right. My game crashed 3 times last night. I did a hard reboot and then played Gears for a bit.

One thing I can't figure out... how do you switch fire groups? So I have my two guns in fire group 1 (one assigned to primary fire and the other assigned to secondary fire). I then bought a cargo scanner that equips to one of my underbelly slots. It said I had to equip it in a fire group. No problem, so I created fire group 2 and made it the only option as primary fire. Problem is, when I hit x to bring out my fire group (#1 by default), I have no idea how to switch over to fire group 2 for my scanner??? I hold X and all the other buttons and nothing is listed to switch them. Looking online has been Zero help because there is no Xbox info... if I were on PC I could hit "n". Friggin!

Press "A" to swap between firegroups.

Took me forever to figure that one out.

You friggin kidding me!? Just press A. Oh mer gersh!!! I woke up early this morning for no particular reason so I played around with this game for like half an hour before I needed to leave. Spent the ENTIRE time trying to figure this out. Just floating around in space pushing buttons. Looked up at the clock, sighed, turned around and re-docked with the platform, save and quit.

So elite... so dangerous!!!!! :-)

My cousin raves about this game and for good reason. We all used to play part three in the series called First Encounters, and it was fun as hell. I'll be getting this when it fully comes out.

I sorta love this game. It's somewhat pointless, repetitive, and at times you are literally waiting minutes just flying from point a to point b... But I keep playing. Looking for that next score, trying to survive Han Solo style in a galaxy that is huge and doesn't give a crap.

The common task of requesting a landing and docking is even fun... And then it gets better when you are smuggling illegal stuff... Got to manually shut down all systems, even life support, to go in cold so they can't scan you. Awesome!

But they gotta fix the crashes. Early on it crashed at least a dozen times in me. But now that I've put more than a few hours in it hasn't happened I a while. Weird.

I tried the demo. There is a pretty steep learning curve on this one to be sure. I liked it though. I'm not sure I have enough time to spend on it though. My playing has tapered off dramatically during the summers when it is daylight longer and the kids are home from school. I could be more active in the fall maybe.

I got trolled by NPC pirates! Stopped at a random signal source I found. Place was empty except for three canisters floating around. They were filled with Gold. Score! Right? Wrong. As soon as I got close like 4 ships jumped in and tore me up! I managed to escape, but I had hull breaches so my life support was gone. And it just so happened that I was two jumps from any system with a Star port. My fate was sealed.

I did upgrade my ship though. Pretty cool compared to my starter ship. Do they have better ships and or weapons as you move to farther Star systems? Right now I'm seeing the same ships and weapons everywhere I go. Just curious how you get the really awesome gear once you get money.

Certain docks have more/better ships. That's one of the reasons I moved to the system I'm in. You can buy pretty much any ship there. (This being the Leesti system, but Lave is right next door and also excellent.)

Overall there is a fairly limited number of base ship models, however.

So besides smuggling (which I'm ashamed to say sometimes includes slaves) and bounty hunting, I am now actively partaking in insurance fraud!!!

So having the boost button (tap) and landing gear (hold + down) on the same button proved to be a problem while pulling into a station. I jacked my ship up!!! Docked my ship at 4%... collected my bounty money which was pretty good for a scoundrel like me at over 50K. Went to check on my repairs and HOLY CRAP!!!! Over 60K for repairs. My wife was watching me and waiting for me to turn the game off so we could watch TV. I looked at her and said, I could buy a completely new ship for that with my insurance policy! And then it hit me... such an easy solution since I didn't have any active quests or cargo I would lose... launched my 4% fighter off the pad... right control terminal to deactivate my shields... full speed ahead into the side of the woolridge terminal. Boom! 15K for a new ship via insurance. Profit!!!
