One of our guys at work has Ting. He loves it. They're a sponsor of a few podcast I listen to. Any experiences?

Sounds like a "you only pay for what you use" plan.

T-Mobile announced today unlimited talk text and data to and from Mexico and Canada included free for new and existing customers. First carrier to do have it.

Great, now that they have Mexico, how about getting service in rural areas so I can get rid of this overpriced craptastic Verizon.

We use Cricket. $90/month, $10 discount for 1 extra line, 5 gigs per phone, best of all, No freaking contract.

I'll never pay too much for a luxury again.

I have t-mobile and my wife is currently in Switzerland/Italy.

Free text, data and wifi calling.

20 cents a min on network calls

Big perks if you are an international traveller.

Does Cricket allow you to use your data for tethering other devices?

I have AT&T now, so if Cricket is just AT&T for less money...

Yes, it does allow tethering. $10/month on the new GSM plans.

according to their website, they don't, which is strange

Please note: This service is only available to original Cricket (CDMA) customers.

The new (GSM) Cricket does not offer Mobile Hotspot.

I got from their website that you can get it for $10/month.

where? I couldn't find it under add-ons.

The lack of tethering is one of the things holding me back from switching so that would be great.

FYI - if you switch, use me as a reference. I get a credit as will you.

From the website:

Plans
Mobile Hotspot may be included in your rate plan, but can also be purchased as an Add-On to your current rate plan for $10/month. A Mobile Hotspot compatible phone is required.

the line I quoted is at the top of the page you linked, which makes it look like the hotspot is a legacy plan.

Oh, stupid me, didn't see that.

Me, the mrs and the kid are all on cricket for $90 total per month total.

the mrs required an iphone 6... so that was purchased at way too expensive of a price.
i bought a One Plus One phone directly from oneplus.net and its been great.
i bought the kid a refurbished phone of ebay and he's been happy with it.

On t-mobile and getting a little tired of the lack of service outside of major cities or off the highway too far. I travel at times and it's frustrating as hell that everyone else has ATT/Verizon connections, and I have nothing.

But with t-mobile I can filter internet usage through my account online for the kids.

Does Cricket have anything like this? I've looked online and it does not look like they do but maybe someone here with Cricket can chime in?

tks

I've actually been very impressed with T-Mobile.

Switched about two years ago, and the lte network has expanded really dramatically. Back then, Houston and bcs both had lte, but in between was nothing. Sane for Houston/Dallas. About a year ago they lit up lte between Houston and cs, and now it's all lte between Houston and Dallas. East Texas has improved dramatically too.

I drove to Palestine, then shreveport, and had lte probably 90% of the way.

I believe I read that they plan on having lte everywhere they currently have 2g by then end of the year.

Plus they offer the whole unlimited data thing. If y'all have passed on them in the past because of concerns over their network, it's honestly worth a second look now.

For the record, I don't work for T-Mobile. I'm just a highly satisfied customer, which I never thought I'd say about a carrier.

Thanks for the great discussion. I've gotten sick of the new financing options that the big two are doing and the hidden costs that exist with both of the plans.

Where do you recommend going to purchase a phone, if you plan on switching to Cricket?

I picked up a lightly used Galaxy S5 off of eBay for $270. You could always try one of the entry level smartphones from cricket for less than $100.
I'd avoid those like the plague. The MIL bought some kind of piece of crap ZTE from Cricket when she switched and has had nothing but trouble. She's traded it in at least once and still calls just about every day because something is either broken or didn't work to begin with. It's total garbage, from the trouble she's had I'd rather use an old Nokia.

I've got 4 smartphones on a shared data plan with AT&T, but our contracts aren't up yet. Cricket sounds like a pretty painless option to switch if we can hold out until they do.

After almost 4 years with my 4S and 15 years with Sprint I'm looking to upgrade my phone and carrier as well.

Is cricket for the lolpoors or am I missing a great deal here? I have 5 lines that would eventually move to the new carrier.

Cricket is for the "I don't want to pay too much" crowd.

Thanks zooguy have you had any issues with them as far as service?

I travel a lot across Texas and want to make sure I don't lose out on coverage.

I haven't had any troubles with service. I live in rural E. Tenn, and get better service than I had with AT&T. It's the same network as AT&T.

Plus, no contract. You don't like it, you can always go somewhere else.
