DirecTV just "ran" wires at my house...

And they put it all around the exterior and then drilled a hole through the mortar of an exterior wall. This is quite unacceptable to me. It looks terrible and now allows holes for bugs to get in. How can I redo this myself the right way? How much do you think it is going to cost? I technically have their wire and splitter. I have my main Genie DVR and 1 mini Genie. I also have a SWM box.

2-story home. Living room first floor. Game room 2nd floor. Detached garage connected with covered walkway. Satellite dish is on the attached garage (only part of this that I'm satisfied with).

The living room wall that we'd like the TV on is an exterior wall. I've heard that this can be a pain for fishing. Is this true?

Oh and the supervisor of the employee that came out said that we could get 90 days of warranty IF in the DirecTV satisfaction review we gave them a rating of 10 on all fields and all YESes. Seemed very unethical.

Ha, no way this happened as stated.

That is exactly what happened. I plan to bring it up when DirecTV calls to do the survey.

I believe it was a contract company or a subsidiary. The installer didn't work directly for DirecTV.

Call them and raise an unholy hell about it. They will make it right by sending out someone else; tell them you want all cabling ran into the attic where they'll drill ONE hole for the source, then split it inside the attic to all rooms. They should also make up for the inconvenience by refunding you or at least offering a freebie of some sort.

Not even close.

I'm surprised the DirecTV guys even did that, usually they don't touch the home wiring to that degree. You definitely dealt with a shady installer, possibly even worth reporting to corporate.

I think that's the point. Rather than run cable through the attic/walls like they should (or try to reuse existing cabling), they took the lazy way out and just ran new stuff around the outside of the house and just drilled straight through the brick wherever a drop needed to be installed on the inside.

That sounds like pretty standard installation. I'm not sure I understand the problem. I assume they used silicon around where the cable went into your house to "seal" the hole, so bugs and so forth shouldn't be an issue. I don't think I've seen an installation where they didn't have to go along the outside of a house to get to the entry point.

It sounds like you want all of the cabling to go into the attic in the location where the dish was installed, right? That may not be possible - I don't know the layout of your attic, but it certainly would not be possible at my house.

I wouldn't get all worked up about it though. Ask them to have someone come out and tell you if it can be done the way you would like. If not, have them remove it and press on.

edit:

this is shady as hell though:

It would be really difficult in most cases to fish cable down from the attic into a ground floor room of a two story building, especially an exterior wall. If there was a cable in that room already, I can kind of see your point, but it too would have to be accessible from the attic.

why did you let them do that? almost all generic contract installers will try to take the quick way out and do that. i've stopped ones from doing it before. the kicker is if that there is no existing wire or bad wire they will have to do a drop and they usually charge at least $50 per drop in my experience (and that is for easy one story drops). so i have always just let them run the wire where i want it in the attic and then drop it myself.

FYI usually the free install is for exterior walls, and around $79 per interior drops.

He should have had you agree to that scenario first? Were you home or someone else? The supervisor is shady.

The way he did it is the free option but he needed permission first and should have caulked the hole.

Long story short I think you either go with it or pay a lot of money having a line fished down the wall. Very difficult to do.

Always watch any contractor guys when they are at your house.

That's why you should always call me for DIRECTV. We never have issues like this. We are high communication, quality and professional.

Sorry that happened but I when I've heard of this in the past the upset person typically wasn't home when it happened. If you were home you shouldn't have signed anything at the end. You aren't in a great spot for an easy resolution.

Call me if you want advice. I can't do anything since it wasn't us but I can lead you the right way.

Agreed.... if you want internal drops you have to specifically say that and be willing to drop extra $ for the cost. All that extra work is not free.

Another recommendation for Aggiefan#1/Brent. He installed DTV at my house 2 years ago and talked me through all the options of packages and installation.

Game Blouses,

Your install had some tricky issues with cabling. You still have my favorite handle on Texags.

Depends on who you get. We moved at the end of last year and the installer that came made two new drops because he felt the cable on the original drops were too old and not worth using. He also put in a splitters and left enough cable rolled up for me to finish the runs however I wanted since we didnt know how we were going to set up the rooms at that time.

You should have stopped them when they started the 1st outside drop.

Wow, I'd have raised holy hell!

at my starter house in Pflugerville ghetto, we got Uverse and i think they ran five lines up and around the wall. no care. my neighbor had a stump in his front yard for years. hoa was meaningless. a few wires give or take wasn't hurting anything.

now if they tried that in my new awesome house...
