HDMI to VGA - Out of Range Error

How long do you want to ignore this user?
On my work laptop which hooks to a dock, the laptop has a HDMI and VGA port. I have two monitors but both are VGA only.

I bought a fairly cheap HDMI to VGA converter. It started out working OK, but then I kept getting an out of range error. From what I've read, I should lower the resolution. But that doesn't seem to work. It also seems like something happened were the vertical got shifted up, but I can't correct that because the monitor's stupid out of range error prevents me from getting to its menu.

Anything else I should check or try before asking my boss to buy me a HDMI monitor?

So the error is coming from the monitor, not your PC? Are you able to mess with the monitor's settings with your laptop not hooked up to it?

Yeah, the error comes from the monitor. What's annoying is you apparently can access the monitor's settings when there is no feed coming to it. I just displays a message No Input. On my monitor that is hooked up to the laptop's VGA output, I can play around with the menu, etc.

check the refresh rate that the pc is outputting, most LCDs prefer 60Hz
