How long do you want to ignore this user?
A comment in another thread got me to thinking about this.

I consider myself a semi-nerd, and I'm conservative. I get the feeling, though, that a lot of the hardcore nerd types lean left.

Thoughts?

i consider myself a quasi-nerd, also conservative.

but most of my nerd friends are pretty liberal.

Liberal, then libertarian, then conservative.

Huge nerd, love apple products, conservative.

Libertarian. Strongly dislike the Democratic and Republican parties. Probably hate the GOP more, though.

Nerds in general tend to be liberal or libertarian. This board is likely to see a much higher than normal population of conservative or even libertarian nerds due to the nature of A&M

+1

Liberal atheist is what I find the most often. I find a lot of the time it's due to groupthink and the fact that it's cool. Try going to Reddit or a WoW general chat when it delves into politics and you'll see.

mickey you are exactly right. I have a friend who used to be a mostly conservative guy, never really a christian, but pretty quiet about faith. He got way deep into reddit and all that and he is super liberal atheistic and pretty vocal about it now.

Minor league geek, Android user though I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Windows phone, Libertarian. Despise Democrats, Apple (the company, not the product) and am thoroughly disgusted with the Republican Party as well.

Reddit is to politics and rational thought as apple is to customization.

Like politics, nerds also have a wide spectrum of ideas. Left is mac, right is pc. But then that's a generalization also.

Moderate conservative. And I'm a technology nerd, not one of those obsessed with Japan or play Warcraft all day nerds.

i think that the fact that this question is posed on a nerd forum of one of the most conservative schools in the country's message board will skew your statistics.

just a thought.

This is TAMU btw.

I'm conservative, but I don't think there's really a dominant political bias in the geek world.

Judging from the communities on other gaming/tech sites, I'd say liberal. I'd have to agree with others that the results around here are pretty skewed.

This hilariously ironically titled Gizmodo story should answer that question.

Or Slashdot.

I do agree that it's groupthink (Sillicon Valley absorbing the culture of the rest of California?), plus the liberals' "Republican War on Science" meme.

Liberal atheist is popular because both modes of thinking make a lot of logical sense. It has very little to do with groupthink.

Are you trying to say that liberalism (in the American political meaning) makes logical sense?

I find that logic drives to a conservative mindset. Liberalism is driven by an emotional sense.

Don't want to start a politics war, but I have never found liberalism logical.

Among gamers, I'd say it's liberal then libertarian, with the libertarians being more outspoken. That's probably due to demographics.

And while there are logical systems of belief possible for the major ideologies, in practice many peoples' political beliefs are far from being logical. It's frequently an inconsistent and impractical hodgepodge of emotion, ill-considered kneejerk reactions defended to the death, and what-my-parents-think. Liberals are hardly exempt from that. The R and D platforms are a reflection of trying to predict and exploit the random stampeding of the uncritical herds, and thus make even less sense. Now add a third level, people who follow the party line without going so far as developing their own beliefs no matter how emotional or nonsensical their personal process would otherwise be.

...and that is why our last few presidential candidates were GWB, John Kerry, Al Gore, Obama, Bob Dole, Bill Clinton, and John McCain.

I believe that math and logic will always drive one to be a fiscal conservative. I find much more "what if..." emotions lying in the liberal mindset.
