Man that is pretty awesome! I just replaced my thermostat a few months ago, and something like Nest is almost exactly what I was looking for, but I didn't run across it for some reason. Ended up with a Honeywell...I've been saving loads on my electric bill though. I wish I had $250 to drop on one of those, though!

My colleague ran out and bought a Nest for one reason: the reporting features it has.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I cannot fathom why it is important to know that 27 days ago the A/C took 37 minutes to cool down your house 4 degrees. Or that your roommates lowered the temp. down to 68 for the 8 hours you were at work.

Why does that even matter?

Don't you want to have control of your life?

I like that it will tell me I used less energy yesterday because I set a more energy efficient temperature, or because the weather changed, or because the thermostat's features kicked in. Seeing a change in my bill is one thing, but being able to know exactly what caused that change is interesting to me.

That said, I think the two main 'features' of the Nest are 1) Wifi/Remote access, and 2) It's unique high tech yet retro look.

I would really like this info as well. I like to track everything. I can't justify the $250 price tag though.

Agreed. I would buy one if it were closer to $100, but then it wouldn't be as cool.

Again, buy a 7 day, 4 time slot per day thermostat, and achieve 99% of the Nest's cost savings at a fraction of the price.

The ONLY reason to buy a Nest is because it looks cool. That's a perfectly valid reason, too, it just irks me when people lie to themselves to justify a purchase.

Someone says why they want one, and if it is any reason other than it looking cool, they are lying to themselves? I'm so glad we have you here to help clear those things up.

I love the ability to turn my A/C on and off remotely. Before I come home from out of town (very frequently for me), I can turn the A/C back on to start cooling the house down from the 85 degrees that I leave it on while I'm away. This feature alone is worth it to me. Save money in the long run by leaving the unit off while I'm away, but still be able to return to a cool house.

But I must be lying to myself...

I'm curious on how the auto door unlock works. I have a door lock with remote and keypad but the batteries only last about 3 or 4 days.

Is this the same thermostat that Reliant is offering if you sign up for their service? I have been seeing a commercial with what sounds like t-sip Matthew McConaughey narration for the last couple of days about a new thermostat that will "learn" your habits and save you money. We already use Reliant, so I am not sure if we can get this, or if it is only for new customers. Either way, I like the fact that you can check this remotely through your phone. Pretty sweet.

Yep, same one.

edit: also I read that it's likely a summer promotion, so they won't be giving nests away to new sign ups as a permanent thing.

I bought one of these about a year ago. It seems that, for the most part, it'll do the same thing as the nest for half the cost.
