Even if you Jailbreak, tethering apps in the Cydia app store tend to cost some money.

Of course it can be done. You just have to have the tethering plan w/ your carrier. Not worth it in my opinion.

I jailbroke my iPhone and purchased an app called MyWi. For $20 I can tether off and on with the tap of a button instead of paying $20/month.

I have heard the same that both AT&T and now Verizon are shutting down the jailbroken tether. I am also interested to know whether or not folks have experienced this.

I am sure they are only catching a fraction of folks doing it, but the truth of the matter is that they can tell and if they choose to pursue it, you don't have much of a leg to stand on.

That said, I think they give warnings rather than just bump your account the first time.

I wouldn't make a habbit of using it, but in a pinch you probably would be okay.

I know some folks on different boards (xda, for instance) that barely use 2 GB and were receiving notices in the mail to stop tethering or they would be bumped to a tethering account, so it seems fairly random.

Works like a champ. No problems with it at all. It even puts a toggle button in SBSettings so you can turn on/off from notification center. I have had no AT&T contact but I don't use tethering everyday either. I would purchase it again in a heartbeat if I had to do it all over again.
