Anon is basically a hybrid vigilante gangster of the internet. Its not an organization, its an idea. Even when an official op is declared, like Sony, its basically a call to arms but there is no central organization. Anyone can join the cause, work alone and create chaos however they see fit and that is an act of Anonymous.

Like em or hate em, they are a chaotic force for internet freedom and you do not eff with that. Or face the consequences of the headless internet hate machine.

I personally wont slam them. Why? I'm scared of them. They could ruin my life. Podcasters wont slam them, they don't want to get DDoSed. It'd be like walking into little Italy and ragging on the Mafia. You. Just. Don't. Do. It.

They are taking matters into their own hands with Sony. There's no good guy here, just a corrupt company trying to Sue geohot into a smoking crater by abusing the legal system. The fight is being taken outside the corrupt legal system and into the streets where there are no rules, this is where anonymous will pwn you.

I agree geohot needs to solve this in court, but the hell is just getting started for Sony.

Just ask HBGary.

Corporations can be real d-bags sometimes, but Sony is within their right to do whatever they want to the hacker scumbag that anonymous is trying to protect.

I usually side with these organizations... not here.

Sony can suck a nut, if you ask me. I hope Anonymous keeps screwing with them till they do something.

1) Tons of people purchased the PS3 simply for the "Install Other OS" feature. Myself included.
2) All of a sudden for no decent reason Sony decides to completely remove that feature.
3) Someone spends the time to hack the PS3 and help get that feature back for those who want it.
4) Sony doesn't like that so they sue that guy.
5) Not only do they sue HIM, but they're demanding the information of everyone who visited his website to be turned over to them.

If I read it right, you forgot #6 that he hacked Sony to make it "hackable" for cracked games.

Sony can do whatever they want with this kid. Throw 'em to Guantanamo.

edit: I've reached my daily limit for posting apparently. By hack sony, i meant he cracked sony's playstation 3. By posting the root key, he made the games much less secure. Just ask the Dreamcast about burning games onto disks and what it did to its console.

No, "Bullcrap", that is actually not what he did, at all. Gitmo, really? Were you born brain dead?

The amount of people on the nerdery calling this "hacking" disturbs me. Let's clear some things up.

First off, Anon is not a team/group/organization any more than "Christians" are. Think of this as a Jihad, ordered by some random cleric. Sure, some people MIGHT choose to follow the call to arms, some might not.
Anyone who says that there are "leaders" or anything of the sort has absolute zero knowledge of the subject.

As for the DDoS, or "hacking" as many of you call it, it is the digital equivalent of a sit in. If someone didn't like Home Depot and organized a bunch of their compatriots to go ask the workers at HD random questions, taking up their time and preventing them from working, that would be THE physical embodiment of a DDoS attack. The tool currently used by most of Anon to DDoS is the same, but they're just all asking the same questions at the same time.

Legally, when you purchase a PS3, you do not "own" the hardware. AS a result, Sony holds rights over what you can and cannot do with it. While in writing, I entirely disagree with this. Obviously, many others feel the same, and are protesting those restrictions along with others.

Sony had a number of options in regards to how to handle this instance. No matter how few or many people installed the other OS, they forcibly removed an advertised feature from a sold product. In addition to this, they have bullied the legal system to obtain information that is not justifiably relevant to their legal case.

I would never be dumb enough to either condemn or support Anon, as there is not any one person or organization to pledge my hatred or allegiance towards. However, I think Sony goofed. The DDoS "attack" is a relatively mature and non-invasive way to digitally protest company practices Anon might disagree with. Good for them.

EDIT: This also has jack all to do with XBL, and I have seen no evidence of their service being altered.

Same BS as music you "purchase" thanks to the RIAA and other groups. They claim if you purchase a CD you can only listen to music from the CD and fought tooth and nail against consumers being able to rip the CD to MP3 for backups or other devices. Thankfully that failed but until the antiquated laws are updated corporations are going to claim anything you buy is a license and not the product.

Yes, that is what he did. His hack allows for homebrewed games. He also posted the PS3 Root Key. With it, I can download a ps3 iso, burn it, and play it.

As for Gitmo..Joke. Relax.

He did not "hack Sony."

He made use of the software and hardware he purchased and had in his own house. If I sold you a book written in a "secret" code, which you proceeded to crack and then post the contents on the internet, what legitimate complaint could I have against you?

You have a really poor grasp of the issue at hand. I advise you to educate yourself with the issue before weighing in.

Man, I remember when 4chan was all about anime tits and video games, and when Anonymous was just those of us that raided Habbo Hotel, quarantined pools, and made human swastikas. Then somewhere along the way, **** got gay, and homos hijacked the mantle of Anonymous for stupid **** like Scientology protests.

Gay, gay, gay.

Terrorists? really?

I absolutely can understand why someone might classify Anon as a group of terrorists. A terrorist doesn't have to be a muslim bombing places then hiding in a cave. Quite a bit of their power is by striking fear (or terror) into people and acting upon it when people think they're bluffing. They've had several actions that were very successful even though their organization is loose at best. It is a very powerful group of people that most don't want to F with.

As far as "hacking sony" goes. There are reasons other than pirating games to get the encryption key. Homebrew games for one will be possible. It's the argument of some saying that they're buying the product and can do what they want and those who say that you're just buying a license and the "owner" can do whatever they'd like. I think that you actually own the hardware. When someone breaks into your house and steals it, the police report isn't for a stolen PS3 license.

If "hacking" the PS3 only affected that one machine, so be it. Hack away. BUT if those machines are going onto the PSN and affecting other gamers online experience, I have a HUGE problem with it.

I know it isn't hardware related, ATM, but hacking, cracking and exploiting have RUINED the CODBLOPS experience.

And I suggest you might want to read the actual post before leaving your opinion on the subject. Already edited that comment in that I meant Sony's PS3. Typed it while distracted.

He posted the PS3 Root Key which circumvents numerous copyright laws.

Just as the Dreamcast about that. Anyone could buy a disk, burn it, and play it at home.

Just ask yourself what happened to the dreamcast?

Why would any developer waste any time and effort in making or porting a game onto the ps3 is the user can just go to Blockbuster or numerous torrent website, download and burn the game onto a BR disk and play it. To add to that. If you think there is nothing wrong with this kid putting the PS3 Root Key online - then tell me why modchips are illegal and I.C.E has come down hard on modchip sellers. Essentially doesn the same thing in that it allows you to circumvent copyrights.

Sony has a legitimate legal complaint here.

The dreamcast failed for reasons other than piracy. The original XBOX was easily hacked and it still did fine after showing up late to the party with the PS2 dominating the game market like the iPod dominates the mp3 player market.

it appears that all he has to do is not release the encryption key per a permanent injunction

...and thats it.

this certainly did not have a dramatic finish
