Does anyone here use an FTP server and if so any recommendations? My company is real small so economically it doesn't make sense for us to get an office server where we can access files off-site.

As in: Do we use an off-site FTP server to transfer big files to outside users?

I do not. I use a drop-box type site to do this.

I like http://drop.io

There's tons. FileZilla is a free, simple to use one for Windows.

CuteFTP is what I always used

We use G6FTP as our FTP server software. It is simple and easy to set up and use.

The pricing is very reasonable. They structure it based on the number of users.

Filezilla is a free option that I don't have any experience with on the server side, but the FTP client itself is fantastic. I recommend it to anyone who needs an FTP client.

I am unfamiliar with Cuteftp.

slim-jim-

can you give more info on what a drop-box is? can anyone find the stuff that is in my "drop"? also, if multiple users need to access the information, can we all use the same log in so its not sending different files and not creating duplicates?

sirhc - on Dropbox, you could have each person create their own account, and then from a central account, share out a folder to all employees. Then you could just place whatever files are needed in that shared folder. Then where ever that employee is and needs to get the file, they can log into the Dropbox website and download it, or if they install the desktop client, it will show up there.

Drop.io in it's free form lets you upload a file up to 100MB and then it gives you a URL that is unique to your file. You send that URL to whomever you want to share with. I have tried it with 5 recipients and it worked great.

Give it a whirl and I think you will like it.

Use the OpenBSD operating system and secure the system well. If I remember correctly, the ftp server software is already on there and all you need to do is edit a file to start it up every time you start the computer. If it isn't there, it is simple to add.

Even if you do nothing to secure the system, you are likely far more secure than using Windows and spending the rest of the month trying to secure it.

A couple of issues i'm having with Filezilla

1) When I right click to open/edit an excel file...it opens it in microsoft works instead of excel. Is this something it does by default because I have excel on my computer...

2) When I edit a document and save to re-upload and then close, it won't let me open it back up again, but the changes are made...does anyone know why it won't let me re-open?

TIA...sorry for being such a noob

Windows firewall is preventing me from accessing the computer that is acting as the "server"...when i disable the firewall it works, but when i enable it, it won't connect. I tried adding filezilla as an exception and it still doesn't work...any ideas?
