Want to get one good strategy based PC game for my birthday. Which one is better? I've always loved the Civ games. I never got IV, but I think I had 1, 2 and 3 and played the crap out of them. I've never played StarCraft at all but just saw it at gamestop and know it's popular. Which one? Or would you reccommend a different one?

If you prefer real time - Starcraft
If you prefer turn based - Civ

Would Starcraft compare to Warcraft as far as how "real time" works? Or Axis & Allies?

Just found another option. RUSE? Anybody have any insight on that one?

Build and Zerg .. or actually have to play a strategy game?

There is no strategy to RTSs other than .. find a way to get whatever resource is as fast as possible, then zerg .. never has been any different since Westwood put out Dune II back in like 1992.

Civ is such a better game than any of Blizzard/Westwoods games its just silly. Anything that Sid Meier has ever produced is better in fact, Covert Action, Pirates .. it goes on and on.

You know it's called a Zerg Rush, not just Zerg, right?

And if you think that's all the strategy there is in a Real Time Strategy game, then it's obvious you've never played one online before.

There are also games called role playing games, where you dont do any roleplaying .. you play a role in a fixed storyline .. where you play through a plot .. and these pieces of crap call themselves role playing games .. Final Fantasy games are to RPGs what Blizard/Westwood are to strategy games .. you can just leave the R and S out of both abbreviations.

Lol. Good insight, guys. So it looks like I should lean toward Civ V. I see myself playing more single player than online. Does that give the edge to Civ over a RTS?

Yes.

Although both have online multiplayer capabilities, while Starcraft has a good single player, its replay value and claim to fame is its online play in Battle.net.

Civilization IV offers more in terms of single player replay value, but still has the option for good online play if desired.

If you will be primarily playing this yourself, absolutely go with the Civ franchise.

If you want to play online (/ be torn a new one by Koreans), pick Starcraft.

Civ for sure...

I had forgotten that Civ 5 was coming out soon. That is going to suck some time...

Or do the obvious choice and buy both.

Pirates might be one of the most underrated games of all time. I could spend eternity running circles around and plundering the Spanish treasure fleet in my Royal Sloop using only the 10 key.

Apparently I'm owning a lot of Koreans these days.

You ever play on the Asian servers? It's almost not even fun. Almost.

I am ready to throw SC2 out the window.

I'm skipping SC2 and awaiting Diablo 3.

On the OP, if you are truly playing single player, the Civ franchise will serve you better.
