This is kind of a nerdery/home improvement post but because it is in reference to my home theater build I figured it would be appropriate here.

I would like to hang a 50" Panasonic on my outdoor stucco wall. The wall is part of my house so it is framed with vertical 2x4's. I might be over thinking a simple operation, but my concern is cracking all the stucco where the wall mount plate rests against it. I bought item 3724 from monoprice for this operation and it is heavy by itself. I have thought to get a pair of 2x6's to pplace between the back plate and the stucco to get a larger contact area so that the stucco may not be overloaded.

Am I over thinking this or should I just simply anchor the wall plate directly to the stucco and into the studs? Should I be doing something else?

Thanks.

My opinion:

1. the bracket is probably painted steel. It will eventually develop rust due to higher humidity. It will discolor the stucco over time.

2. I would not use a 2x6. You want as much of the load to be vertical and not cantilevered. The further away from the wall you mount the TV the more likely it is to want to fall away from the wall. Maybe an aluminum plate would work?

Stucco is essentially concrete, but it isn't usually all that thick. If you know your anchors or screws are going into studs behind the stucco I'd say your mount should be more than solid enough.

Thanks Spice. However, in Phoenix we dont have much of as big of a rust issue as most of Texas. I am going to ensure that it is bolted directly into studs. I may even drill an additional hole through the plate so I have 6 anchors, it my give me more piece of mind.

OK - on the humidity part. But the paint on the bracket will eventually scrape, rub, discolor the stucco. If the bracket is removed or replaced - I would want good odds that no permanent damage is made to the stucco. Maybe instead of a hard substance like aluminum, some kind of durable padding would be useful?

Yeah, I will look into that. See what kind of thin'ish material could pad it. Thanks for the idea.

You could probably get away with using some thick painters tape to protect the wall but honestly if you hang anything on just about any surface for an extended period of time it will discolor enough where you'd need to repaint anyway.

I'd probably be more worried about it wearing down the texture but just make sure you like the spot you mount it and leave it there.

Id be more worried about moisture getting in my wall and rotting the inside of my wall and less interested in cosmetic stuff.

What Id do is put bolts into the wall, seal them and then attach a bracket with nuts outside, so that my wall was sealed.

I mounted a TV in my garage where the studs were not where I wanted them to be.

I bolted 2 2x4s horizontally across the wall with lag bolts, and put the TV mount on those.

It was only a 32" so I was not real concerned about the extra 1 1/2" of cantilever. Also, it was in my garage, so how it looked wasn't an enormous concern to me, just had to compliment the beer fridge.

I decided I am going to go to home depot and get a piece of scrap carpet or a piece of those pay per foot runner rugs to place between the mount and the wall. It may help to spread the load over the whole surface of the wall instead of crushing all the raised edges of my stucco finish.
