I actually think the D90 is a pretty good camera. The size and plastic body makes it an instant no-go from me personally, but I could see how it would be a camera that someone like my mom would like. The sensor in it is good, too. It is one of Nikon's better cameras, though.

Going with the prosumer cameras over the consumer cameras is totally worth it to me. I very rarely have to go into an on screen menu while shooting (though the menu navigation is much better too). There are discreet buttons for 90% of what you'll be messing with while shooting.

I can change white balance, ISO speed, drive speed (single shot vs. burst), focus mode... and on and on without having to take my eye out of the viewfinder.

That and the 40D is weather sealed better, if you think that could ever be an issue. Finally, it just feels more substantial in my hands. With my big hands, the rebels feel like toys.

I'm going to head up to Best Buy (pretty limited in College Station) again to fiddle with them, they have the 50D's which I imagine feel identical to the 40D's.

At that point I guess all that will be left to do is have one of you guys sell me your 40D so you can upgrade.

On a related note, is there anyone in CS that actually has a 40D that would be up for me taking a look at it? Figure if I'm going to buy one on-line I'd like to have a feel for it first.

at one time, I'd have said go down to ritz they'll have one to play with....

BUUUT, ritz doesn't do canon anymore.

Yeah, found that out Saturday.

They offered a photography class if I bought a new Nikon from them though.

There classes are.....ok. They're great for people who don't know how to turn the camera on. Mike is a decent guy, and a pretty good shooter, but I never cared for the class setup we had....

The manager Dave, while a little goofy, is a really nice dude in the end. In some ways I wish I still had that job. He's also Ex-special forces, and a combat photographer. Judging by the way he clams up about it, and the years he was in country, I believe the man was a member of a SOG team but I'm not positive....

The two guys I met were very nice, open and honest.

One of them uses a 40d he bought off eBay, said it'd be a great camera for me.

the 40d is very nice i'm sure. i'd just like to say that if you'd like to save a few hundred bucks, don't be afraid of the 30d, i like mine a lot.
