Too many unknowns. We could still extend him this time next year, franchise tag him, etc

It is a gamble because if he balls out next year he'll demand a massive contract.

If he balls, we also should have a Super Bowl appearance…so I'll allow.

Actually it is the right thing to do…I am sure CJ's representation was pushing for a contract that would make one of the highest paid and the Texans chose to hold off.

When Dak Prescott, with 2 playoff wins in 10 years compared to CJ's 3 playoff wins in 3 years, is the highest paid player in the NFL it's not hard to see how the agent would paint that picture.

Round 1 of the NFL Draft is three weeks from today.

I don't disagree at all, just glad the Texans are allegedly holding off till after next season.

That'd be the easiest rebuttal of all-time by just flashing up the Pittsburgh game tape and asking how CJ can possibly get credit for that win...

It wouldn't surprise me that the agent put out a huge number knowing it would be a no. Agent shouldn't be wanting CJ to sign an extension right now on the back of a mediocre season and two miserable playoff performances--he should try to bounce back so he can demand that with leverage.

Deep QB class next year, right?

Yes, 2027 is a much better draft class, and not just at QB. I don't know what round grades each of these guys will have but here's a snapshot of the top 10. Moore would most likely have gone number 2 this year to the Jets if he was in the draft.

Julian Sayin (Ohio State)
Dante Moore (Oregon)
Arch Manning (Texas)
CJ Carr (Notre Dame)
Jayden Maiava (USC)
LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina)
Drew Mestemaker (OK State)
Sam Leavitt (LSU)
John Mateer (OU)
Brendan Sorsby (Texas Tech)

WR's that would likely be picked if draftable this year before any of the 2026 prospects:
Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State) is the most likely no 1 pick next year for any team that doesn't need a QB
Cam Coleman (Texas)
Ryan Williams (Alabama)

Edge
Collin Simmons (Texas)

It will be interesting to watch Caserio in this draft since he likes to move around a lot. If he makes moves to drop down then draft capital for 2027 will be valuable.

I wonder if we might see a few draft day moves for future 1st/2nd picks to take advantage of what could/should be a better draft?

OK, here are some mock draft predictions:

ESPN's Mel Kiper - Georgia DL Christen Miller

ESPN's Field Yates - Ohio State DL Kayden McDonald

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah - Texas A&M OL Chase Bisontis

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein - Texas LB Anthony Hill Jr.

ESPN's Matt Miller - Clemson OT Blake Miller

Texans Wire's Cole Thompson - Arizona State OT Max Iheanachor

USA Today's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz - Clemson OT Blake Miller

USA Today's Ayrton Ostly - Florida DL Caleb Banks

USA Today's Nate Davis - Indiana WR Omar Cooper Jr.

The Athletic's Mike Jones - Clemson OT Blaker Miller

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks - Clemson DT Peter Woods

CBS Sports Garrett Podell - Texas Tech DL Lee Hunter

Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Alexander - Ohio State DT Kayden McDonald

Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice - Alabama OL Kaydn Proctor

Fox Sports Greg Auman - Clemson DT Peter Woods

Sports Illustrated's Gilbert Manzano - Max Iheanachor, OT, Arizona State

Athlon Sports Luke Easterling - Oho State DL Kayden McDonald

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman - Ohio State DL Kayden McDonald

NFL.com's Nick Shook - Utah OT Caleb Lomu

Fox Sports' Rob Rang - Ohio State DL Kayden McDonald

Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer - Ohio State DL Kayden McDonald

Pretty varied opinions. I was surprised at the number of DL selections as OL has been such a need. That said, I get it - gotta restock based upon losses in the future.

I still say OL is the path.

The only only reason to go DL is if we are going BPA. Thats one spot we seem good at imo

Do we take who we have highest graded on the board between OL or DL?

It seems there are a lot of options between those two positions so I could see us moving down and out of the first round again.

With four picks in the top 70 hopefully we get the OL much needed talent influx and stock up on DL for the upcoming losses in a season or two.

The mocks and player rankings seem to be all over the place. There's not even a sure bet at the 2nd pick because the Jets could draft almost anyone and it would make sense other than Love because they have a RB. It would be ideal to trade back but I have a feeling a lot of teams will be trying to do the same given this is not an elite year at any specific position. There's only a few guys that have been deemed the true number 1 at their position in the draft and everyone else is fighting for second. OL and DL have the most spread out opinions that I've seen and those are positions Houston will be looking at.

QB - Mendoza
RB - Love
TE - Sadiq
CB - Delane
S - Downs

Houston's best option for trading back would be similar to last year if another team wants to trade back into the first to take Simpson at QB but I have doubts that any other QB gets taken in the first round other than Mendoza. This could be another 2022 when only one QB goes in the first round.

That's the going rate. Just imagine if he does well this year. He will want 40 mill per probably

I thought it might be, but in my defense I was doom scrolling in between innings last night and didn't get a chance to fact check before the next pitch.

Let's just do an all Aggie Mock.

Round 1. Trade pick 28 to Jets for 33, 48, 2nd round 2027
Round 2. KC Concepcion WR
Round 2. Chase Bisontis. OG
Round 2. Eli Stowers, TE ( finished at Vandy)
ROund 3. Trey Zune, OT/C
Round 4. Leveon Moss, RB
Round 5. T York, LB (Pitre backup).

Trade the rest of the picks for more 2027 picks. I know it won't happen but maybe some of it will.

Not sure Bisontis will be there in the 2nd. There is legitimate talk he could go in the 1st. How crazy would that be if he's our highest draft pick this year?

Not that it's the most enlightening list to look at because you still don't know who is really coveted but here's the current list of prospects the Texans have met with:

https://www.houstonstressans.com/2026draft?srsltid=AfmBOoqeaqgL_5RYrjup8uFySqloFMsCDHdhIrW5DPG8IbXsVU77Ykfp

What might be interesting is the number of meetings per position:
OL (OG & OT) - 21
DT - 14
TE - 13
WR - 10
LB - 9
S - 8
RB - 7
C - 6
Edge - 5
CB - 4
FB - 1
K - 1
P - 1
QB - 1
